From Amazon.com: Irony, silliness, and the deepest questions of the human soul blend together delightfully in this funny, original novel by Norma Howe. The day David Schumacher turns 16, he decides to ease the pain of his father's death by legally changing his name to "Blue Avenger," after a comic book hero he created when he was 13. Armed with his new nom de plume, David hopes to abolish handguns, win the love of Omaha Nebraska Brown (the new girl at school), and create the first guaranteed weepless lemon meringue pie. He also wouldn't mind discovering the answer to the mystery of all mysteries: "Are we truly the masters of our fate or merely actors on a stage, playing our parts in a predetermined cosmic drama over which we have no control?" Through a crazy course of coincidences (or perhaps predestined circumstances) Blue Avenger ends up accomplishing almost all of the monumental tasks he has set for himself. Yet he never quite answers that question of free will, a conundrum that Howe leaves the reader to wrestle with until the very last page. The text is peppered with "facts," such as the detailed death of a particular sow bug and the prediction of an earthquake in a certain California subdivision, which seemingly have no bearing on the story. But Howe ties all of these factoids and statistics together in the finale with a flourish reminiscent of Louis Sachar's Newbery award-winning Holes. Teens who enjoyed the mental jigsaw puzzles in Sachar's excellent novel will no doubt also dig The Adventures of Blue Avenger. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Fun Philosophy: The protagonist of The Adventures of Blue Avenger is sixteen-year old David Schumacher. The morning of his birthday he decides to change his name to Blue Avenger, the name of a cartoon character he has created. The change triggers a sequence of events that cause David, or rather, Blue, to accomplish the majority of the goals he has set for himself except for one: to find out if free will exists. Though I could not put the book down it had its flaws. Mainly the plot and the point took away from each other. The author's writing style is humorous and light, making the concept of trying to find out whether or not free will exists one easier to digest and comprehend. However, her characters are so loveable and the book so quickly paced I was torn between wanting to race on ahead to see what would happen to David, or to stop and think about the points Norma Howe brought up. For someone looking for a book focused on philosophy I would suggest Sophie's World instead.
Blue Avenger is an interesting person to read about!: The Adventures of Blue Avenger is a great read. I read it over the course of two days. Once you start reading it, you get enthralled in the book. While it's not the best book I've ever read, it's quite interesting. It's got that "it's not real, but it's not too terribly far-fetched" quality to it. David changes his name to Blue Avenger (not THE Blue Avenger, just Blue Avenger) on his 16th birthday. It's something he's been thinking of doing for a long time. From what I read, he's doing this to find the answer to the ultimate question: Do we really have power over what we do, or is every action predetermined? The book made me think about my own beliefs, and kept me reading to see what his conclusion was. I recommend this book not only to middle- to high-schoolers (to whom David is close in age), but to college students as well, who are all trying to discover who they are.
A great book to read: The Adventures of The Blue Avenger is a Fictional Book Written by Norma Howe. I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed this book because of many reasons. The first reason I enjoyed this book is because of there was a bit of reality in the fictional book. Some of the events in the story may have been based on real life, which interested me from the beginning of the book until the end. I also enjoyed this book because of the theme and plot. I enjoyed this because Norma Howe went and showed the theme and the plot quite often and well so, that made me really enjoy this book. I also liked "The Adventures of the Blue Avenger," because it is entertaining, with the twists that develop in the plot. I also like how this book can relate to some problems that we face today in the world. I also liked the book because of that the book was very interesting and wanted me to keep on reading it until the end. These are some of the main reasons that I enjoyed the book so much. The story is about a 16 year old boy named David Schumacher; David's father had died when he was thirteen in a car accident. But on David's Sixteenth birthday he changes his name to Blue Avenger (an idea he has been thinking about since he was younger), because David wants to be a superhero. The Blue Avenger was originally a cartoon character that David drew. During this story David changes his name to Blue Avenger. Now David is Blue Avenger "the secret champion of the underdog, modest seeker of truth fearless innovator of the unknown" He also completes many tasks that he never thought that he could do before in his life. During the course of the story Blue Avenger helps solve disputes and have a girlfriend that he always wanted to have. He becomes famous around the country for his heroics. He saves his principal from a deadly swarm of bees. He also helps pay for treatment for his friend so he can finally have this one girl go out with him. Blue solves crisis's such as helping the school press out. He also is trying to get his driver's license to drive a vehicle. His efforts to try and complete his dream drag on. His dream is to create a perfect non-weeping lemon meringue pie. Through even more of his ideas he helps solve a dispute at a child's birthday party. And once again he finds out that he becomes famous on not one, but two occasions. Throughout the story Blue Avenger seeks the answer to the question of all questions. This question is "Do we control what we do in life, or are they predetermined by some force that we cannot comprehend?" He also takes on a major quest. This quest is to outlaw guns or bullets, because of the senseless violence and deaths. He discovers of a new kind of secret way how to fight back without the senseless violence. Later on his girlfriend Omaha Nebraska Brown receives a letter from her brother. Blue Avenger, of course helps her out, when she is in trouble and needs help. And all throughout the story he tries to answer the question with Omaha Nebraska Brown to see if we are really the masters of our own fate or not. Overall, I enjoyed this book very much. I recommend that people read "The Adventures of The Blue Avenger," because it is very fascinating and has many other good qualities a book should have. I suggest that people ages10 or up should read this book, mostly because of the vocabulary.

A Book About a Superhero: THE ADVENTURES OF THE BLUE AVENGER is a book about a sixteen year old boy becoming the Blue Avenger. I gave my story three stars out of five, because I don't really like the idea of becoming a superhero. I didn't like reading this book, and it wasn't even close to the best book I've ever read. The only part that was interesting was a sixteen year old punk, becoming a hero. Other than that, I didn't like it. it's hard to follow, and it's way too long, it took forever to read. Three stars isn't bad, but it wasn't the best. I would have rather picked something else to read. What kind of name is the Blue Avenger? Overall I didn't like it, it's not even close to a four, or a five.
