The complete hiker: As a new hiker/backpacker I found this book to be very helpful and entertaining. It has 99% of the information that anyone would need to get started hiking and I'm sure there is information for the seasoned hiker as well. There are web addresses and phone numbers for maps, clothing and gear. It's a terriffic place to go for whatever information you need.
Best hiking how-to out there...: As an avid year-round hiker, I have read several "how-to" guides on hiking and backcountry travel, and they were all "OK". Then I stumbled upon "The Complete Hiker" at a library and finally found the gem I had been searching for (and I quickly ordered a nice new copy). This book has it all; it even covers winter hiking and snowshoeing, which is quite important to me since I can't see hanging up my pack just because it snowed! The personal accounts are fantastic and the writing style is like having a conversation with the authors. The overall layout of the book is it's strength...displaying a fresh concept that never gets boring no matter how mant times I consult it. A complete guide indeed.
