[.ca] The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby ... (ISBN 0071381392)

Finally - A Book with all the Answers!:
What a fantastic book this is! I have read 2 other baby sleep books but this is the one. Many books just talk about theories and vague ideas. Elizabeth Pantley actually gives you practical advice that you can use and alter to your own needs! I was about at my wits end with our 15 month old son when I came across the NO CRY METHOD. I was so worn down and was always worrying about how long it would take to put him down at night. Elizabeth gives some wonderful advice on how to get through that while working through the METHOD. She gives a step by step process that you can try for getting your baby to sleep on his/her own and sleeping through the night. I even emailed Elizabeth and kindly returned my email with more wonderful advice or insight. My son isn't a perfect sleeper yet, but he's close! Thanks Elizabeth.

Excellent, long-term results:
I first used the ideas from this book with my daughter, who has special needs. The moment I picked up the book, it made so much sense to me--to change a habit carefully, step by step, rather than trying to quit what we'd been doing since birth "cold turkey." It took several months of patient work, but it was worth it. Every book I read tells me that children with her needs generally sleep poorly, but my daughter sleeps all night, every night. She is well-rested and that makes her better able to face her challenges and learn and grow. Since my son was born I haven't worried about his sleep because I knew I could count on this book--and indeed, he is also learning how to sleep well. With patience, this book provides excellent long-term results and many peaceful nights.

A dissenting view:
First, I'm glad that many people have had success with Elizabeth's methods. We did not, in fact we gave up after about 10 weeks. It has been a long two years but our daughter generally sleeps through the night now. Why the low review? I just found the book to be a collection of "pretty photos" and feel good stories. I suppose she needed them to convince all of us to keep doing this method for weeks on end. I would have preffered a short and to the point style (call it sleep deprivation lack of ability to focus on "everybody else's successes"). By the way, I am no fan of Ferber either.

some good ideas:
I thought this book was very practical and had some usefull ideas. My 10 month old is still not sleeping through the night but I think she is improving. The thing I did not like was the fact that some of her ideas did not work for us and it doesn't have any advice if they dont work except to keep trying them. Overall a good book and would recommend it to others.

Happy to have an alternative to Crying!:
I bought this book as well as the Ferber Method book. I wanted to be well researched. What I loved about this book was the compassionate side. It is written from a mother's perspective rather than a science perspective. It doesn't promise fast results, but give practical tips to the frustrated mother. After 11 days my daughter was sleeping from about 8pm at night until 8am the next morning and only waking at 1am to nurse. It also turned me on to attachment parenting, to which I also bought (and reviewed on this site) Dr. Sears' Attachment Parnting book. I recommend both. THey have totally changed my parenting style for the better.
