Sometimes too Balanced: This book is a collection of essays for and against the Death Penalty. It is written by people from a variety of backgrounds, including philosophers, lawyers and judges. The effort to make this book balanced is exceptional, however in its effort to be balanced, it seems that weaker arguments are included in particular in the Retentionist camp. It may be that the editors really wanted a comprehensive survey of the various arguments made, but still an excellent volume and one of the few places where one can find a serious set of arguments on both sides of this divisive issue.
