Some effective ideas:
I found the book overall very interesting. A good overview of the basics of Photoshop procedures and capabilities that takes you from image capture to finished Black and White print. The greatest part of the book for me was Chapter 4, in particular "Turn up the Volume! This One Goes to 11!" to control tone in different parts of the image. A good learning source.
