[.ca] Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (ISBN 0307243273)

From Amazon.com:
They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, to mail them back and forth over the summer from wherever they are. Beautiful, distant Lena is going to Greece to be with her grandparents; strong, athletic Bridget is off to soccer camp in Baja, California; hot-tempered Carmen plans to have her divorced father all to herself in South Carolina; and Tibby the rebel will be left at home to slave for minimum wage at Wallman's. Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

Lovin The Pants!:
Four girls of completely different shape and size and one pair of pants that fits them all perfectly. This is the story of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Ok, so the title doesn't exactly make you want to dive for the last copy on the shelves, but let me tell you that after reading it, you will find no better suiting title. Lena, Tibby, Bridget and Carmen have been best friends since that one September in which they were all born. They have shared both happy time's and sad, basically living the lives of the average teenage girl. What I liked most about this book is that it has both reality and non. The reality in this novel comes from the girls themselves and how none of them live the perfect life and each of them encounter their own problems. The non-reality in the novel is none other than the pants and how they so magically fit each girl even though it is scientifically impossible due to the difference in each girls body type. After the pants are discovered, the girls decide that, although they will be splitting up for the first time and they will all be spending their summer apart, they will stay connected by the pants. With that, the pants are past back and forth from girl to girl throughout the course of the summer, with a letter attached enclosing the very details that went along with them. They did this to prove that just because they weren't together physically, it didn't matter because they were mentally. Before I give away too much, now's a good time to go diving for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Love it!!!!! You will too!!!!:
When I bought this book, I wasn't looking for great literature (books like "The Bark of the Dogwood," "Middlesex" or some other bestseller fiction). No, what I was looking for was a fun read. As a sixteen-year-old bookaholic, this looked like just the thing to brighten up a dismal school week: fun and fluffy. Well, fun it was, but this was anything but fluff. The stories of each of the girls are moving and well-written. I found myself engrossed in Brashare's simple prose and really caring what happened to each of the characters. The first couple of chapters didn't really reflect the whole book, so if you start it and dont' like it, don't give up. This book moved me profoundly and brought tears to my eyes at several points. All of the emotions before me on the page were ones that I could relate to. If you're a teenage you HAVE to read this. If you're not, I would still recommend because it is an amazing novel that rivals the best of literary fiction. If you're interested in a more literary, yet funny experience, try "Bark of the Dogwood," and if you want something totally off the beaten path, try "The Birth of Venus." All are good, but for sheer fun and substance, "The Sisterhood" is tops!

I LOVE THESE BOOKS!!!!!:

Even if you've seen the movie... read the book!:
I picked up this book from the library when I heard that there would be a movie coming out. I'd seen it on the shelves before but hadn't read it because the title seemed silly. I was pleasantly surprised. Ann Brashares managed to draw in not only myself but also my sister! The fragmented storyline, difficult to pull off, works because you care about the characters so much. The plot lines and "lessons" are a bit predictable but you don't care because you're rooting for the characters. If you haven't seen the movie, READ THE BOOK FIRST!! The movie is okay but they reinvented Lena's character and story, probably because they got rid of Effie, her sister. Bailey is great in the movie.

A cool book by a really good author!:
Have you ever got separated from your friends for the whole summer? Well Lena, Carmen, Tibby and Bridget are separated for the summer in their lives! Lena is very pretty but she does not want to show any of herself. Carmen is sensitive and thinks she is so fat when she is not. Tibby, on the other hand, is cool and a little bit goth; her friends think she is selfish. Now Bridget is really different and special (because her Mom died) but she is very sporty and really good at soccer. One day when the four girls go shopping they find a pair of jeans. The funny thing is the jeans fit all of them (they are all different shapes and sizes). So they all go to the place where their moms became friends. And they decide the pants will travel between the four of them. They also make rules for the pants. Lena is going to Greece to see her grandparents. Carmen is going to visit her dad. Tibby will be staying home. Bridget is going to a really good soccer camp. Lena meets a guy in Greece who is very nice. Carmen meets her dad's new family (which she never knew he had). Tibby meets a girl named Bailey who is very sick right now. Bridget has a good time at her soccer camp, and she also makes a lot of friends. So they all end up having a good summer. Will they stay friends? I really liked this book! I think Bridget is the coolest. Also Ann Brashares is a really good author because when you write her a letter she will answer all your questions. I should know, she wrote me a letter!
