[.ca] The Legend of the Candy Cane Board Book (ISBN 0310704472)

From Amazon.com:
For those who cringe at the creeping materialism surrounding Christmas, a pious story about the origins of the candy cane is definitely a change of pace. A stranger arrives in town one dreary November and begins hammering and sawing away at his newly rented storefront. When a small girl offers her help, she's in for a childhood fantasy-come-true, as it turns out all the shelves and counters are being built for a candy shop. After offering young Lucy gumdrops and lollipops, Mr. Sonneman launches into the history of the candy cane. With his guidance, she discovers that the upturned candy is in the shape of a j--for Jesus. Right side up it looks like a shepherd's staff. And the red stripes? The blood of Christ from his terrible whipping. Lucy and Mr. Sonneman set out on a quest to share this story with everyone in town. Their message (and their gift of the pepperminty red-and-white sticks) brings the whole town together in a joyful celebration of Christmas (and candy). James Bernardin's old-timey acrylic and colored pencil illustrations are reminiscent of Norman Rockwell, but depict both modern and biblical times. Candy canes will never taste quite the same again. (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Wonderful, wonderful book:
The book is so beautifully written and illustrated. It draws you into the story so that you have a sense of the time and place and feelings of the characters. Plus, a wonderful way to teach children about Jesus and the sacrifice he made for us. I recommend it highly!

Captivating Little Story!!:
With beautiful artwork, and a marvelous story line, this book is a treasured must in any family's collection. It follows the story of a stranger who comes to town, with all the townsfolk hoping for something which suits their needs, but the children all secretly hoping for a candy store, which, in fact, it becomes. Then the story takes off, with the candy maker telling the story of the candy cane, and how it relates the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and how we can share that story and our faith with others. It is a marvelous tool in the hands of parents (even if the story isn't quite accurate - some of it is), and children will love it being read over and over again. Let's face it - most of us love candy canes, or at least looking at them. Highly recommended.

Candy Cane:
This book showed a legend of how a candy cane came to be. Myteacher read this book to my second grade class and it waswonderful! ...

A Good Story - but it isn't HARDBOUND.. it is a BOARD BOOK:
The is a nice christmas story. A story to read with family and friends during the season... and brings a spirit of remembrance towards the life & gifts of Christ. But be forwarned - this book is not what I expected as a "HARDCOVER" book (ie a hardbound hardback book). It is a BOARDBOOK (a book where each page is made of thick cardstock). If you want a book in this format... this is a good story to have in your childrens library.

A Beautifully Written Legend:
Several years ago, my husband and I chose to give our children each a book at Christmas that they might pass down. The Legend of the Candy Cane tops our list of books in this collection thus far. This story is loved by all of us in the family and certainly knows no season. The lessons provided in this book are invaluable (provided you are looking to for a way to recapture Christ with Christmas). The illustartions keep the attention easily of my 2 year old and the text is loved by my 4 year old. Put this book on your wish list--- it's a keeper.
