From Amazon.com: "Sexual satisfaction, sexual safety, and sexual sanity are among life's greatest challenges," says David Reuben, M.D. "The more you know about sex, the more you can enjoy it." No less than 100 million readers learned to enjoy sex more with his original Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* *but Were Afraid to Ask. Now, 30 years later, this classic sex-information book has been updated, reflecting the dramatic changes in medical and psychological understanding of sexuality. Reuben gives the answer to every sex question you ever wanted to know, and some you wouldn't think to ask. Did you know, for example, that porno stars are not as endowed as they look? Just as the camera adds 10 pounds to the look of a normal person's body weight, it can add a couple of inches to a normal penis. The stars also sometimes use vacuum pumps before--ahem!--big scenes. (We knew you needed to know this.) Reuben explains how to perform the "Three-Headed Turtle," why not to do the "Prince Albert," why Spanish fly is better left to farm animals, and how 20 minutes of aerobic exercise enhances a woman's ability to reach orgasm. His style is friendly and clever--you'll find yourself reading chapter after chapter just for the fun of it. --Joan Price
Reuben's book is proof he is no expert on sex: David Reuben is no more than an armchair speculator. He has never done any serious sexual research in his life. His comments in numerous areas, particularly about sexual minorities, are outlandish and completely false. As a sex researcher, I find his work an abomination. In my practice I have seen many celibate homosexuals. Those who are researched are usually Gays who are out and active. The proof of a neurobiological basis for homosexuality has been proven, particularly by the Germans who use electrocoagulation therapy to change men from homosexual to heterosexual and use antiandrogens to keep female fetuses from being masculinized. Reuben hasn't read a serious article on sexuality in his life. If he belongs to APA, I am surprised. Likely they would have thrown him out for his medical and psychiatric nonsense. It reads like a play book for Focus on the Family, The Family Research Council, and of course our leading politicians. Probably where Mike Huckabee learned about sex. Anyone reading this trash should take it for what it is a spoof on what is real and authentic.
No-nonsense approach to sex: Having read this, I too found it to be somewhat biased towards gays and transsexuals, but one must admit that it is a no-nonsense approach to sex. It covers many different sexual topics, and makes for some interesting reading. For those looking for something a little more suggestive, I'd advise you look elsewhere.
I shouldn't have asked: This book is so misinformed. (That's why girls swing on swings? A rash is proof? Where is this information coming from?!) I would not recommend this book to anyone; it will only cause myths to be perpetuated and perhaps worse. Thumbs down!!
He hasn't changed: This book, when it first appeared, became one of the most damaging and injurious books of the 20th century. Reuben's ignorant, false lies about gays and lesbians were read or heard about just about everyone, and caused a lot of pain. Pain to me, who beleived what he said, pain to my mother, who beleived it. How sad his book became a cultural phenomenon. I really don't have much of an opinion about his other topics, but he seems very narrow minded and judgmental and self important. There are undoubtedly some good things in this book, but you can find the same information elsewhere. In this new edition he has toned things down a bit, but this is, after all 2002. I do not recommend this book to anyone for any reason.
Everything you always wanted to know about sex: Actually, I read this book when it first came out many years ago, and since I am currently looking for a book to read that is really funny, I thought of this one. Back then, I read this book to my sister-in-law late one night while we shared a glass of wine and we couldn't stop laughing! We couldn't believe how funny it was! And I can't believe the reviews of the people who take it so seriously. But of course, it was also educational because it answered questions I hadn't even thought of yet. Still....I want to share another evening of laughter with another special friend, so I am going to buy it again.
