fine for the easily frightened: I have a four year old daughter who is easily frightened (we can't read Goldilocks and the Three Bears in our house), but she is more than okay with this book. In fact, it is one of her favorites. Some have complained that the artwork is creepy and disturbing. But I think it is different and attention grabbing. David Shannon is a talented artist and his story about nonconformity definitely gets the point across. This is not the same old book all over again. It is fresh and interesting and both my children love it.
a good book and a little scary...: Do you like lima beans?? Do you pretend not like them because all your friends HATE them? That's how Camilla felt. One day she looked in the mirror and screamed! She had stripes. She went to school the next day and when they sang Oh Say Can You See, she had stars and red and white stripes! Some docters gave her pills and she turned into a multi colored pill!! The worst thing that happend was she met a lady who said to become one with your room and she just turned into a monster and her mouth was her bed, her dresser was her her nose and two paintings were her eyes. I think you should be at least 7 to read it.
My kids can't get enough of this book: This is the most popular book with my three children. Anytime they see it at the library, they have to check it out. I have read this to them many, many times, and they never get tired of reading it.
A lesson on conformity: Beautifully illustrated lesson on conformity. Teaches kids to adhere to their true selves and their own wishes versus that of others. Seems obvious to most grown ups, but my kids identified with "giving up something you like without even thinking about it" theme. Good day for lima beans.
A Bad Book for Scaring a Child: Watch out if you have a child who is easily scared. My Kindergartener had the book read to her in class and she is still frightened at night about the girl with weird stripes. So just a caution, some like it and some do NOT. For some it is just too odd and the illustrations are just too spooky
