[.ca] Dog-Friendly Dog Training (ISBN 0470115149)

peeing outside rather than inside:
i did not find the book very helpfull as i am having alot of problems with my dog. Pongo is his name and he is a dalmation he wants to do the toliet inside rather than out, for example i take him out a walk and he waits till he is home again then do it in the house and he does it anywhere not just in one place. I have tryed taking him in the garden on a lead and he will look at me then sit down then lie down when he gets bored, i could be in the garden with him for over 30 mins to 45 mins, soon as i bring him in he will pee. could somone please give me some more tips to help me get him to pee and poop outside.

confusing, confusing, confusing:
after reading this book, i was back to square one, but seemed even more confused. i know there are a great number of dog training books, i went on to look for an easier one to understand. people need to knoe that all dogs have different characters, and there must be other methods to use if one doesn't solve the problem.

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.:
This book was recommended to me by an animal behavior specialist for training an old dog I rescued from the shelter. He wasn't housebroken and had a myriad of other behavior problems that needed work. This book teaches you how to train a dog using rewards instead of punishment. It works remarkably well. I was able to teach my dog all the basic commands ('sit', 'down', 'stay', etc.) in just a couple of weeks. I also taught him to fetch a ball which was fun for both of us. When I first got him and tried it he would not even look at the ball when I threw it so I thought it would never work. But it only took a few weeks before he was fetching like a pro - giving a great indoor workout for this senior dog. The book is comprehensive but brief and includes nice illustrations that make the training easier. It is also written in a simple style that should appeal to children, too. My only complaint about the book is the reward style of teaching is most effective using food treats and rewards. My dog has digestive problems and so this method is limited. Still, all in all, this is a great book and I can highly recommend it - especially to new dog owners or those who are still "punishing" their pets.

Helpful and Fun!!!:
My Boston Terrier puppy was a bit of a handful so a friend recommended this book because she said it was really helpful with her Rotweiller puppy. What I like about it is it is very simple, but also thorough. The writing is great and the illustrations are perfect for making the instructions perfectly clear.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND for dogs of any age!:
This is the best dog training book I have read...and I've read plenty. I have beagles...and do foster care for a beagle rescue. I recommend this book to everyone who takes one of our dogs because the training isn't totally geared to puppies like most other training books. It's very useful information for anyone adopting a dog of any age...it makes sense...and it's easy to do, common sense training.
