[.ca] The Leisure Economy: How Changing Demographics, ... (ISBN 047084034X)

An Interesting and Provocative Book:
This book is kind of radical in that it suggests we are soon going to be a society with a lot of time on our hands. At first, I thought that meant the vision promised in the 1960s of huge productivity gains and a paperless society and all that. But the author talks about a different kind of picture, one where the baby boomers have retired and those still in the workforce want more balance in their lives. I liked the last part of the book best, where the author talks goes through what the changes will mean for different industries and productsit gives you a lot to chew on if you have a business or are thinking of starting one.

too many statistics:
I started reading this book but gave up after a couple of chapters. It contained too many statistics that I found boring.

Leisure Everywhere:
" bought this book after hearing the author do a radio interview, and it lived up to its promise. It is really about leisurewhat it is, how much we value it, how wed spend our time if we had more of it. I was initially interested in how that relates to the travel and leisure sectors, and the author covers it very well, talks a lot about who will have money and who will have time. But the book covers a lot of other things too, including how the baby boomers have chosen to be really time crunched and how they disapprove of other generations who dont want to be that way. Im not sure I agree with that, but the author makes a pretty convincing case."

Thank you!:
Ms. Nazareth touches upon a wide variety of current topics from a leisure perspective. As a Recreation and Leisure studies student, I found her book to be very accurate in her predictions and a reflection of what is being taught in my classes. The author seems to have a deep understanding of the differences between demographic groups and what each of them is looking for from their work/life balance. I wish more economists and other business people would support a "leisure movement" to give the field the clout it deserves. Thank you for writing this book.

Great Read!:
What drew me to the book was it's funky cover (loved the flip flops!). As a fan of the "chick lit" genre, I thought I'd found a good weekend read. What I got instead was a smart and insightful look at what we are all experiencing - over scheduling with an eye to the "leisure society" that we all dream of. I disagree with other post's negative view of the "statistics" in the book - I think the correct term is "research". Plainly speaking, this author "get's it". All in all this is a smart, as well as clever, read!
