Good reference - but a bit dated: This book contains hymns, narratives, instructions, poems, love songs, etc from different periods of ancient Egypt. This book also contains many stories that can be found in Miriam Lichtheim three volume series on Egyptian literature. Each story is proceeded by a brief commentary, and is followed by the text. The only problem with the book is that it is based on research from the 1920's - and some stories show their age. If one wants a more recent work, the "Literature of Ancient Egypt" by Simpson, Faulkner, Wente is a good choice. This book was also previously titled "The Ancient Egyptians: A Sourcebook of their Writings".
GOOD AT ITS MOMENT: Although having been written by one of the most distinguished German Egyptologists of the turn of the last century, this very complete book unfortunately is much outdated and superseded by much better and accurate translations, such as those of M. Lichtheim and W.K. Simpson et alii, to which the interested reader should look for. Certainly, it is not recommended for newcomers. Still useful for the learned ones.
