[.ca] Shadow: Section 31 (ISBN 0671774786)

From Amazon.co.uk:
Shadow is the second of the darkly atmospheric Section 31 quartet of novels, featuring the shadowy, amoral organisation whose agents will do anything they believe necessary to safeguard the interests of the Federation. Shortly before Voyager embarked on her mission into the Badlands, Section 31 planted an agent aboard whose mission was to observe and possibly act against the Maquis. Now, almost five years later and deep in the Delta Quadrant, someone is trying to kill Seven of Nine. First her regeneration alcove explodes seconds after she has stepped out of it, then a wall panel blows up in her face. It's a bad time for sabotage because Voyager has detoured to watch two suns collide and has discovered a pre-warp ship struggling to escape the destruction. The Rhawn have built a huge colony ship, housing 800 million of their people, in a desperate attempt to survive the destruction of their solar system, but they are not yet far enough away. Voyager is attempting to help, but as the attacks against Seven escalate, it seems the ship's computer itself is compromised. It's hard to write a Section 31 story set so far from the Federation, and this one lacks the complex plotting of Rogue, but it's a strong story nevertheless. The purple-skinned Rhawn are brought vividly to life as they struggle to hold their fragile ship together, and the counter-plot of the attempts to kill Seven effectively ratchet up the tension. --Elizabeth Sourbut

its suspensful and will keep you reading for hours:
this book is very cool! all i can say is that it will keep you reading! a foreign space ship the size of delaware and millions of people at risk is in trouble because an asteroid hit it. will voyager save them? and how will the do it when its thousands of times bigger. meanwhile 7 of 9 is trying to be killed by a secret attacker. but how do you stop him when you cant see him or have any record of him being on the ship or issuing an attack on seven? buy it and find out. i promise you wont be disappointed!

Walk On By This "Section":
As a Star Trek fan of many years, one thing that I value when reading a Trek novel (or any novel based on a TV show) is that I can mentally "see" the characters. It's important to me that I can visualize them doing the situations the writers have put them in and to "hear" them saying the dialogue. Sadly, this was not the case for this book. I felt I was reading about characters simply with the names of characters from Voyager, not the characters themselves. I don't think the authors watched the same show I used to watch, if they ever watched it all all. While the plot is interesting, any suspenseful elements it could have materialized never did and it left me with a feeling that I'd have had more excitement reading a JC Penney's catalog. The resolution to the alien's plight was typical of all poorly written Trek episodes and book: it was wrapped up in the last 10 pages of the book quickly. A very "scotch tape" ending. No drama, no suspense, no nail bitting "oh my gosh" ending. Thud. The aliens characters were two dimensional. I could have cared less if they lived or died. Even the elements of "first contact" were downright bland. Lastly, as a Seven Of Nine fan, I was intrigued by the idea that someone was out to kill her. This was my main reason for purchasing the novel. The solution to the attacks on Seven were downright uninventive. I saw it coming pages before. Simply a subtle rehashing and "tweaking" of tired Trek plots. While I didn't throw it across the room in disgust, it'll be the first Star Trek novel I have sold used in quite a while. If you're a Seven of Nine fan, jog past this "section" You won't be missing out on anything.

Ship 1, Woman 0:
The concept of Section 31 piqued my interest but, the idea of Section 31 on Voyager almost prevented me from getting this book. I had the same fear as another reviewer about this agent possibly still having contact with Section 31 back in the Alpha Quadrant. I'm not ruining the story by saying there is no contact with the Alpha Quadrant, and that is established quite early in the book. Now the book gets good. Some are complaining about the aliens and the alien problem in the book, and yes to an extent this could have been a bit less canned, but this really is a side plot. The main thing is trying to figure out what is going on with Seven and who is trying to kill her. This had me guessing all the way up until it was revealed what was going on. I will say I was shocked when Voyager fired at Seven on the "planet ship". Yes the SHIP fired it's HUGE phasers at a tiny human woman!! All in all, the main plot was a good one, the side plot was just barely average. In comparison to TNG's book this one is terribly lacking.

Section 31: Shadow:
I recieved this book as a birthday gift in December and I have read it 4 times since. I am a die hard Star Trek fan, and if you are too, you'll love this book. The plot develops wonderfully! It's just like watching an episode!

A great book!:
I've always liked the TV show, and this was the first Voyager book I read. I loved it! It has a great idea, background, and a great idea for the villin! It also shows the clash between Torres and Seven, which I find very intertesting. Any Voyager fan should buy this book!
