I have been playing the Ruy Lopez (Spanish) for years but it can be hard work. I found Mr Lane's choices against the lesser known variations a relief. He manges to pinpoint a way to extract an advantag ewith the minium work. It is aimed at adults who do not have time to study so he recommends various lines to play as White. I would say it is useful up to 2200 standard because after that you will need more details on some variations. It is aimed at club players and I think it shines some light on every line Black can go for.

Useful but not Definitive:
This is typical of Lane's work. It is useful as an introduction but not much more. Experienced players will quickly find that his recommendations are designed to take novices off the beaten track. Unfortunately, there are usually reasons these lines are not popular in master play.
