OMG!! - It's Robert Pollard! Pinch me!!: I know that the whole idea behind the usage of footnotes as part of the narrative is in homage, but for those keeping score, 178 footnotes for 183 pages of text is OTT. A more apt title would be "Footnotes From Now On" (ooooh, do ya get the inside joke, do ya, do ya??) At this rate, why not make it an average of one per page. This is not so much a writer's insight into the indie rock scene but merely diatribe for diatribe's sake, railing against whatever pleases him or not, without so much as a rationale. I have to admit I finished the book after reading previous reviews. A literary equivalent of watching a drunk making a total arse of himself at a party. Segue: meeting and partying with an idol (his choice of words, not mine)- Pollard - is one thing, and maintaining a certain decorum in relating that in narrative, but he reads like a gushing school-girl's diary full of "he loves me, he loves me not". Instead, read the book he namechecks : Nick Hornby's "Songbook". Two stars for "The Formula" to rank musical preferences. Brilliant, but not worth the price of the book. This is what libraries are for. Oh, and by the way... he likes beer.
Disappointing: I bought this book because it was recommended for fans of Chuck Klosterman's "Fargo Rock City" and i usually love any book about music, especially Indie Rock. But unlike Klosterman's books, I didn't find this book interesting or funny. The footnotes were over used and extremely annoying. I made myself finish it, hoping that there would some kind of point to it but it didn't really go anywhere. bleh.
