Amazon.ca: Children's illustrator and author Kady MacDonald Denton won the Governor General's Award for A Child's Treasury of Nursery Rhymes. This language-loving selection of Mother Goose classics is enriched with children's rhymes from other cultures, including China, India, and Africa--even one published in the original Zulu--and embellished by delightfully impish watercolours. Denton, whose other prizes include the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbons Illustration Award for 'Til the Stars Have Fallen and a Mr. Christie's Book Award for The Story of Little Quack, was given free rein to choose whichever rhymes she found most delightful. She based her Child's Treasury on her own and her children's childhood favourites, plus some gems she discovered while researching this project. The book is divided into four sections: rhymes for baby, toddler, and schoolchild, and "All Join In," which features riddles (with clues provided among the illustrations), limericks, and tongue-twisters that reveal Denton's love of wordplay. Her illustrations--particularly those that divide a poem into four comic strip-like panels--resemble those Maurice Sendak created for I Saw Esau: The Schoolchild's Pocket Book, as does the frolicsome tone. Marginal illustrations with single lines of text that are tucked into the upper corner of each page and together form hidden rhymes and rhyme medleys--one for each of the Treasury's four sections--make a particularly charming touch. (Baby to age 9). --Deirdre Hanna
The most complete of the many "colletions" books: I bought at least 4 books on collections of children's rhymes and this one is by far the most complete. The illustrations are good, although they lean a bit too much in the "Where the wild things are" direction for my taste. However, whereas some of the other collections books tend to be full of more illustrations than rhymes, this one fits the bill with a perfect balance between both. Did you know that "Rockabye baby" actually has three verses, not one and that "Mary Had a Little Lamb" has eight verses, not four? Can you remember all the words to "This is the house that jack built" or "The Farmer takes a wife" or "I had a cat and the cat pleased me"? If you'd like to be able to answer yes to these questions, buy this book! It's truly your best choice in the "children's collection of rhymes" group. Of course, my toddler loves the book - it's a favorite for long car rides.
FULL of rhymes - charming illustrations: We borrowed this book from the library, and our just-about two-year-old will receive a copy for her birthday, as she would like to read it night and day. The illustrations are pretty, yet energetic and not overly sweet, and the content will last several years. Also, this book is very well priced
My son LOVES this book!!: At the ripe age of one and a half, he's dog-eared this book and knows all the rhymes. When he wants to hear one, he'll start saying the first line. This book has a great collection of traditional rhymes and an interesting sprinkling of international rhymes, combined with wonderful illustrations. We never travel without this one.
Just what I wanted.: I could remember the tunes but not all the words to some of those old rhymes. This book filled in the gaps plus it has lots of other rhymes, to share with my child.
