[.ca] Wine Report 2006 (ISBN 0756613205)

The best reference for buying AND learning about wine:
"Best Wine Book in the World 2004 & 2005" -- Gourmand International Award. It's on the cover of the 2006 book and is truly earned. DK 2006 covers more wine-related topics than any other book: Wine Regions, Yearly Vintage Review, Top Picks in each Region, Wine Politics (e.g. counterfeiting, misleading award labels, appelation regulation), Production Issues, Wine & Health, Best of Wine Resource lists, and Wine Science. All in 430 pages. The book is much more than Tom Stevenson could ever do maverick; his book consolidates wines by country with a cohort of global contributors reviewing the well known regions alongside rather obscure regions like Israel, Missouri, Lebanon, Switzerland, and Greece. Each region is dedicated its fair value of attention. Every contributor in the book discusses that region's year-by-year harvest & weather, talks about trends & news related to that country's wine, and also reviews the last 5 years' vintages. Each region has ranked lists based on Quality, Best Bargain Wine Finds, Best Producers, Best Value Producers, and Unusual/Exciting Finds. Most pocket references are books with "Top 10" lists that offer little or no insight to the reader as to how they arrived at their conclusions. Those lists are in this book as well, but the lists here are varied so you can use them to pick wine by budget, for collecting, or for impressing the gueests. And the number of regions covered combined with the op-ed writing about that region's wine production will provide you with an edge in wine knowledge that most competing books can't. Great reading for both the rookie or oenologist.

Heard it through the grape vine:
I've tried a few recommendations from the Wine Report, both domestic and European. I must say I haven't been dissappointed yet. I find the book easy to navigate through and highly informative. This book is definitely great for wine novices as well as advanced students of the vine. Thanks Tom! Well done.

A very handy and up-to-date resource for the wine lover...:
Wine Report 2004 by Tom Stevenson is an exceptional reference for both the expert and the beginner. I'm in the wine business and have dozens of wine books which each have their merits. Mr. Stevenson's New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia is one of the benchmarks of the business and is respected world over. The Wine Report 2004 is a much smaller book in comparison, but it's chock full of information. Relying on local experts to cover the various regions of the world is a well chosen strategy. The Grapevine section at the beginning of each chapter provides juicy (no pun intended) gossip for wine insiders. It's also great to read the opinions of the experts and their predictions/hopes for the future of wine in their part of the world. The information inside is as current as it gets. Simply a great pocket reference for the wine insider. Well done!

A must have book on current trends in wine:
Finally a comprehensive review of the world of wines with current information. Tom's cadre of wine experts detail the latest trends & news for each region of the world. They also cover the quality of recent vintages and the reasons behind it. They even pick out top producers, up & comers as well as top notch selections for your consumption. I was especially interested in the variety of topics. To mention a few: Wine & Health, Classic Wine Vintage Guide, Wine on the Web & The 100 Most Exciting Wine Finds. For those of us looking for current, up to date information in the world of wine this is your bible.

A 'Must-Have' for traveling wine lovers:
The Wine Report 2004 is a very useful and easy to use resource with a comprehensive guide to wines around the world. This is a must-have for the busy person who loves travel and loves wine.
