[.ca] Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program (ISBN 0767904362)

From Amazon.com:
With 50 books to his credit, Gary Null has long been an authority on alternative medicine. The host of the longest-running syndicated daily health radio program, Natural Living with Gary Null, he aims to set the record straight on the plethora of conflicting information about aging--and how to prevent its signs--with his Ultimate Anti-Aging Program. He tested the program on a group of 1,000 volunteers, who give glowing testimonials about their experiences: "I can see a marked improvement in my mind, spirit, and body"; "Letting go of sugar has been great"; "I lost 20 pounds without dieting!" Null then explains the multipronged antiaging "protocol." First, he advises that you detoxify your body to prevent aging from free-radical damage; then, fortify your immune system with proper nutrition; and lastly, build bone mass (through diet and exercise) to prevent osteoporosis and weakness. This isn't a quick-fix program; it fills nearly 300 pages, with suggestions ranging from sealing off the vents from your garage to your house to drinking a gallon of purified water a day. Null also suggests a low-fat, organic diet, including herbs, nutrients, and other supplements (including acetyl-L-carnitine, phosphatidylserine, zinc, and many in between) that he says may extend life and that helped him run a 50K national championship. The final segment covers "mental gymnastics," including a self-quiz to analyze your value system, levels of anger and stress, and their potential detrimental effects on your health. This is a comprehensive health program, but one that requires a good deal of dedication.

The Ultimate Aging Program by Gary Null PhD:
Dr. Null's writing is excellent in this book which teaches some of the better protocols in the alternative medicinal area. He begins the book by teaching patients to develop and enforce a food journal to diarize their eating habits. Next, he asks that you make a general assessment of the body by looking in the mirror and critiquing noticeable aspects. Graduates of the Null program have reported higher energy levels and better health. The author espouses a number of aging theories in the arsenal of alternative medicine: - eliminate free radicals - reduce the rate of blood flow - regulate the thymus gland to improve T-cell counts - manage the elasticity of lung tissue Dr. Null cites some important protocols for classic disease processes. i.e. - anti-Parkinson's disease food groups are asparagus, spinach and soy - alpha lipoic acid boosts the power of anti-oxidants and benefits diabetics - anti-arrythmic foods are lettuce, asparagus, cucumber, radish, endives and oats - anti-arthritic foods are cantaloupe, avocado, cucumber and evening primrose - anti-aging foods are carrots, barley, papaya, cabbage, sweet potato and spinach He reminds us that we can extend life through diet, exercise and phytochemicals. The work is an outstanding addition to any health library in conventional or alternative medicine.

SOME SOUND ADVICE, BUT PRESENTED IN A MISH-MASH MANNER:
To the book's credit, the advice given is sound, even if not new or Earth shaking. It does go into great lengths about eliminating the junk food and toxic elements from your body, i.e., too much sugar, fried foods, meat (animal protein,) but haven't we heard all that before? One does not need to buy a book to hear the message, it has been drilled into us in virtually every newspaper, health brochure, and health-centred television program for years now. To the book's discredit, was the rather disorganized presentation style. I found myself constantly flipping back and forth from one page to another and enduring footnotes, which distract me to no end. My preference is to have information presented in a clear and concise manner, in an well-organized, structural format and that certainly was not found here. If you gather some new information here that helps you improve your quality of health, then for you, the book will likely be a success. However, I found anything presented here which claims to promote "anti-aging," is nothing more than sound, common sense advice, which may help maintain your quality of health but is definitely not going to prevent aging. If one is concerned about "aging gracefully," it is common sense to eliminate as many junk foods as possible and eat nutritionally balanced meals, but I would place far more emphasis on a positive mental outlook to combat aging, than worrying about the dozen French Fries I ate for lunch last week! Vegetables and fruit are sprayed with herbicides and pesticides, in meat we worry about Hoof and Mouth disease and Mad Cow disease, we have all heard of cases of contaminated drinking water, grains have been genetically modified, sugars, salt and preservatives are supposedly harmful...so what is "safe" to eat? One can eat "sensibly" till the end of time...nothing is going to prevent aging. We would need to join Peter Pan in Never-Never Land, find Shangri-la or the Eternal Fountain of Youth for that one. One book I do hightly recommend is "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type" - that one is a great book definitely deserving of a five star rating.

PHD? Scientist?:
I rushed to purchase MR. Null's book after seeing him tonight of PBS. That was before I read all of the negative reviews posted here! I noticed one reviewer had suggested that a visit to quackwatch.com might be helpful. I went there and was not pleased with the information I discovered. I suggest you do the same before purchasing this book! I decided to purchase Dr. Timothy Smith's book instead (a reviewer had recommended it). I appreciate the fact that readers are allowed to post their reviews and thanks to those reviewers who stopped me from making a bad purchase. Perhaps PBS should take some of the money it receives from the Pledge Drive and use it to investigate it's guest.

true information:
This is information is important for people to know. White flour dairy products and meats are very bad for your health. I listen to gary null every day. once you see the difference in following a great diet that gary null explains your health will improve. Losing weight health problems improve

Be fair!:
These are my opinions from my own observations. Watch Gary Null on PBS, especially his "Art of Health" show, he gives away tons of useful, free information. Judging this book based off of some reader's review is no better than judging the book buy it's cover. It's a mistake to ingore his message just because he can come off as an activist against drug companies but he does has some points. In america we spend billions of dollars on health care each year and yet are we healty? NO. Every 30 seconds someone dies of a heart attack alone. Now let's say you're a medical professional in that trillion dollar buisness.. Of course you're not going to speak out or leave your lucrative job to preach the truth (unless you're passionate about getting the truth out there, even though you know thousands of people will disagree with *some* of the things you say) But most doctors aren't taught nutrition, except maybe how to deal with diabeties or high blood pressure once you already have it! And of course you should be objective and extract what's useful and discard the rest from anyone's message. So be fair, hear the man out before you decide if he's the real deal or not, but considering 95% of his message is simply about eating mostly raw foods and "right thinking" (which any yogi is taught), I think you'll see his message is positive.
