the coerced programmer's bible: If you have the (mis)fortune to fall into the world of Access development as I did, you cannot go wrong with this book. I've been working with Access since version 2.0, and using the ADH since their 97 version. It's not really for an Access beginner, of course, but it can teach you everything you need to know to go from being an intermediate user to being a power developer, in really CLEAR language, and with tons of really reusable answers. I've looked at other Access books, used a few in my time, and they just read like books about Access. This gives you answers.
The Getz and Litwin franchise is looking a little tired: I have the Access 97 version of this book and thought it was time to upgrade - I needn't have bothered. 95% of this book is the same as the earlier edition. Apart from a very basic chapter on ADO there was very little to distinguish it from the 97 version. In fact a there are parts of the book that talk about "cool new features" that were introduced in Access 95! If you don't have an earlier edition of this book, and you are a hardcore developer, then by it's a worthwhile purchase - otherwise try volume 2. Maybe it contains all the "cool new features"

Simply the best: This book is simply fabulous. In fact both Volumes 1 and 2 are brilliant. If you need accurate, detailed, and to-the-point information about Microsoft Access then this is the only way to go. The Developer's Handbook has everything anyone could ever need to know about Access. Granted, it is not for Access beginners, but if you have a handle on tables, forms, queries, and reports, and you aren't afraid to get into a little bit of VBA, (i.e. if you're not in the market for "Access for Dummies" or "Access in 24 Hours") then skip the books for intermediate users, such as the completely inadequate Access Bible, and get the Developer's Handbook. Part of my job is developing Access databases for small businesses and I use this book on a daily basis. I have yet to find a single feature in Access that this book does not cover. And if you're trying to do something with Access that it doesn't readily perform, chances are this book will tell you exactly how to do it, or it will provide a work-around for the problem you are facing. Do yourself a favour: don't waste your time buying other Access books. Get the Developer's Handbook and you'll save hours of frustration.
