[.ca] Flipped (ISBN 0786247983)

From Amazon.com:
Juli Baker devoutly believes in three things: the sanctity of trees (especially her beloved sycamore), the wholesomeness of the eggs she collects from her backyard flock of chickens, and that someday she will kiss Bryce Loski. Ever since she saw Bryce's baby blues back in second grade, Juli has been smitten. Unfortunately, Bryce has never felt the same. Frankly, he thinks Juli Baker is a little weird--after all, what kind of freak raises chickens and sits in trees for fun? Then, in eighth grade, everything changes. Bryce begins to see that Juli's unusual interests and pride in her family are, well, kind of cool. And Juli starts to think that maybe Bryce's brilliant blue eyes are as empty as the rest of Bryce seems to be. After all, what kind of jerk doesn't care about other people's feelings about chickens and trees? With Flipped, mystery author Wendelin Van Draanen has taken a break from her Sammy Keyes series, and the result is flipping fantastic. Bryce and Juli's rants and raves about each other ring so true that teen readers will quickly identify with at least one of these hilarious feuding egos, if not both. A perfect introduction to the adolescent war between the sexes. (Ages 12 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert

You'll want to read this book.:
Wendelin Van Draanen is the author of the SAMMY KEYES series, but if you are looking for a funny mystery, FLIPPED is not the book for you. This book is something totally different. FLIPPED does just what the title says; the story is told from two alternating viewpoints: the boy and the girl. It begins when they are 7 years old and ends when they are 13. And boy do they have a lot to learn about relationships and love! Juli learns that to-die-for blue eyes are not the best reason in the world to fall in love. Bryce learns that people who live in houses with dumpy yards might be cool people. Bryce's first concern with Juli is definitely not her house. It's Juli herself. The girl won't leave him alone! She runs over while his family is still moving in, climbs into the moving van, and absolutely takes over. It's downhill all the way from there. Bryce runs through most of the book, sometimes literally, just to stay away from her. And of course, Juli sees all this from an entirely different perspective. The guy needs help in life; she's more than happy to give it to him. Besides, his eyes make her feel weak all over. Sometimes, she just sits in her driveway and stares at his house, wondering why he won't come out. Kids aren't the only ones in this book who have things to learn, either. So do parents. There's an eye-opener! And if you read it, you'll come to see things differently, yourself. Like, should you be honest or should you be polite? And what do appearances have to do with reality? You'll want to read this book to find out what happens when everything flips and Bryce stops running from Juli and she starts running from him. Is there something more to Juli than a dumpy yard? Is Bryce nothing but a gorgeous pair of blue eyes? Are these two made for each other, or should they avoid each other like the plague? (...)

Good for your kids:
I went into this book thinking it was going to be the typical highschool romance story. A friend of mine had reccommended this when I had asked her for some book suggestions. The way she put it, it sounded very interesting. This book is about Bryce and Juli. They have been neighbors for years and Juli has a huge crush on Bryce and his brilliant blue eyes. Bryce thinks Juli is downright annoying. Throughout the story you you will read a chapter of Bryce's POV and then Juli's POV on the same situation. I guess I should have read a few paragraphs before purchasing this book. Although the lesson was important, this is not a book for somebody that is in 10, 11, 12 grade. This book is about middle-schoolers and it is for middle-schoolers. I gave it three stars because it was cute and made me chuckle a few times and is good for a much younger crowd than myself. I just happened to not enjoy it as much considering that I'm looking for something more adult. Also, the ending left you at kind of a cliff hanger and that really kind of made me upset. Nonetheless, this is a great book for your kids an junior high student but don't buy it for a highschooler.

sweet!!!:
this book was so adorable! i read it in a couple of hours, i was hooked from the first page. it's the story about two kids, a girl and a boy, and how they feel about each other as they grow older. now... i guess i should first say that i find this kind of story to be really cute, so this probably taints my perspective, but aside from that it was decently written and was more complex than i initially assumed it would be. the story is told by both the boy and the girl, and they take turns telling the reader what happened chapter by chapter. and, as one might assume, the story starts off with the girl being obsessed with the boy and the boy wanting nothing to do with the girl. since this is a romance of sorts i would assume that one would would be able to fabricate the basic plot line from that information, so i won't 'spoil' it for you. the characters go through self discovery and heartbreak. there is a theme of 'breaking free of one's old mentality' and embracing a passion for life and the main characters emphasize this transition (or the state of being if not the actual transition itself... though the moving from one state to the other is the most fascinating aspect and would be the crux of the story). i really love finding stories like this. it's a sweet, innocent romance, but with some depth to it which makes the story all the more real and palpable. you get to watch these kids grow into the people they will be. juli is such a free spirit, though you don't quite expect this right away as bryce starts off the first chapter, i really enjoyed her character. and bryce gets an inner strength as he grows older that represents a real struggle for the individual's own self awareness. ... it's almost like you want the book to be a stuffed bear or something so you could hug it. the ending was somewhat unsatisfying because it kind of left the reader hanging... and it was excellent because of that. this isn't a story about relationships and dating and similar such things, it's about before that happens, when you first discover love. you can tell the author did an excellent job with this because you're left wanting more, you want to know how it will end. this ironic thing about that is it probably will never end... in which case this tiny book would become a multi volume saga and loose it's appeal. we as the western audience we are crave the 'honeymoon' phase, even if it means destroying true love just to have somewhere to start all over again. this book gives the reader hints of the honeymoon phase, but doesn't go into it, leaves the reader at the cusp of what could be. a great ending if ever there was one. much more amazing than i initially assumed it would be, this book is great and i recommend it.
