[.ca] John Hedgecoes New Manual Of Photography (ISBN 0789496372)

Not worth updating older editions:
Hedgecoe doesn't seem to have added much new knowledge to his previous editions of the Handbook of Photography. The photos and text are new, but at the same time, are pretty much the same. If you have the older Knopf editions, stick with them. If you don't this book is still a good resource.

Not for advanced users, for beginners only.:
Book is old, yes, it's old. Photos are shot no later then early 80's. Besides they are 20-30 years old, almost all photos are shot with low speed Agfa slide film. It's not fair, is it? I mean how many of you (us) shoot with slide films? Book tells about everything but too little information on each topic, one page fro each topic. Dedicating only two pages (out of 420) to exposure is not what good photography book gives you, does it? Whatever is given, is given from technical point of view, not an artistic approach. Book can be useful for someone who's making first steps in photography. Book is for basic knowledge, ABC's or even DEF's of photography. I was looking something like PQR's - wrong pick. I have to admit there are one or two nifty tricks explained, but that's it. If you're advanced amateur (no talk about pros) forget about this book. If you're beginner pick it and after squeezing all juices of it, give it to someone else, like I gave it to my wife who resently took camera into her hands. Good luck!

John Hedgecoe again and again it is brilliant!:
My friend, I'm not a professional photographer , I'm amateur, I'm in love with photography and thankfully to John Hedgecoe books my joy of it greater and reacher then ever! John Hedgecoe is unique, he is unique in this way that after decades of his super successful carrier and after dozens of published book he still enjoy photography. He never publish things like "this soft box on the right and this on the right side". He intrigue you to experiment to make you own way, he teach you to see beauty, enjoy it and shoot it. I read his books as novels. I read it again and again because they clear, friendly and helpful. He like knowledgeable friend who helps you, who guides you and who loves you. All photographers are sweet souls, because we love beauty, we looking, we hunting for it. And he still hunting for it despite time and experience, he's still not tired. You may have the simplest and cheapest camera but be encouraging you may take outstanding pictures and his books will help you to develop sense of harmony and improve your vision. if you are looking for book that will tell you "go there and do that" go elsewhere , it is not about it. But if you in the quest and would agree that it is always good to leave something to chance, to nature and to imagination you in the right place and John Hedgecoe is a right person to help you with that.

Excellent book to learn about photography in any format:
I searched long and hard for a book that struck a balance between digital and traditional film, yet focused squarely on the aspects required to understand how a camera works in order take a great picture rather than spending time in the digital darkroom. This book has delivered on both counts, and more. Printed on beautifully thick and glossy paper, this book walks you page by page through all aspects of photography. Each page contains beautiful, full color photographs to illustrate the concepts being discussed on the page. Furthermore, each sample photograph details the focal length, f/stop and shutter speed used for the shot so you know exactly how the results were achieved. If you're looking to move beyond point-and-shoot to take advantage of the creative aspects of your camera and willing to invest a little time to understand how your camera works, then I strongly recommend you grab this book. It is perfect for anyone looking to move from consumer to amateur, or from amateur to prosumer.

A great book for learning about your camera!:
I found this book to be good for an amateur photographer or one who just needs a little more insight on photography. This book teaches the basics of the camera all the way up to composition. The book also goes a little bit into the real and digital darkroom. A good post-production chapter. Great book, I recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more about their camera and how to successfully use it.
