[.ca] Upgrading and Repairing PCs (ISBN 0789734044)

A guide and reference manual for everyone:
Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" (17th Edition) is a must-have for anyone interested in a better understanding of how PCs work. With in-depth explanations of every major component of a PC, Scott has again provided the reader with material that every user, from beginner to expert, can find useful. I would, in particular, recommend this book to those who treat PCs as a hobby and who may not have a great technical background. Scott explains the technical details in a way that makes them easy to comprehend, and one topic logically follows from another, avoiding the confusing necessity of jumping ahead to understand something earlier in the book. This is the second of the "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" books that I've read cover-to-cover (the first was the 16th Edition). While Scott updates the book approximately every year or so, adding new details and removing the old, there are still plenty of what I would say are outdated bits of information that could easily have been left out for current users, except for interest's sake. Considering that the book comes with a DVD that includes many of the previous editions (10-16) in pdf, you're getting all the old details anyway, which makes it unnecessary for a lot of that detail to remain in the book. This is really its only fault. On the whole, you cannot go wrong owning this book. I intend to purchase and read it from front-to-back every year. Just updating myself on the workings of components I would rarely consider (like how a CPU is made, or how the burning process of a DVD works) is worth the read. Buy it, you won't regret it if you love working with PCs.
