Makes you feel as if you're in the hells of Vietnam as well: This book, as everyone else has said, is the best book on or by LRRPs I have ever had the pleasure to read. It puts you right there with them, a feat many books have trouble doing (especially when it comes to nonfiction...). Read this book, and you may find yourself having a deeper respect for Vietnam veterans (and all other veterans, for that matter). On a side note, I found this book at a flea market, and when I got it home I found it was signed by Rotundo, and had a message to "Vince". If anyone out there knows who Vince is, or would like to buy the book from me, please drop me an Email at my_own_clone@hotmail.com
Great Ranger Book: This is the best of the books I have read about the LRP rangers. You feel like you actually know the them, and feel for them when one of them dies. It gives a very real look at not only what happens on the battlefield, but also what goes on at their base camp. All the drugs, sex, and police calls you can handle. Of the two I found the John L. Rotundo portion to be the most interesting, but Ericson still does a fantastic job. Whether they are hiding from MP's in the local bar or out in the field ambushing a group of half-stepping NVA, it's exciting throughout. The only complaint I can say I have about this book is that it gets mildly confusing. They switch back in forth telling their own stories in no particular order, which, as you might think, gets annoying. But this is not enough to hamper enjoyment of this great book. Recommended to anyone who likes war stories or the LRP books.
Charlies Rangers: I purchased this book based on its 5 star review,I found the content to be somewhat redundent,as you have 2 people writing at different chapters in this book.I have also read "Recondo LRRPs in the 101st"by Larry Chambers, and "Force Recon Diary,1969" by Bruce Norton. Both are better written, especially Force Recon by Norton..I believe the 5 star rating is a bit to high for "Charlies Rangers"...
Charlie Rangers were truly the BEST OF THE BEST: Don Ericson and John L. Rotundo are truly American heroes. They served their country for 3 years with tenacity and courage. This book provides a realistic and heart felt story of the 75th Rangers, (LRPS) in the VIETNAM WAR. From the carnage of a jungle ambush to the love the men shared for one another, CHARLIE RANGERS is the best war book any person can read. It tells of the lives and war experiences of the authors, including their training. These men displayed acts of courage, bravery, and often pure hatred for the enemy. This book is not for the peace loving hippie I might add. The soldiers in CHARLIE RANGERS often mutilated bodies, cut off ears, and showed signs of slight insanity. One must understand that this is what happens in war, because war isn't a happy thing. "WAR IS DELIGHTFUL AND EXITING TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED IT"
A former ranger An Khe 1969-70: I found this book to be very informative as to what it was actually like to be in the bush. I did find it very disturbing that Mr. Rotundo could put down another Ranger Unit as he did with K Co. of which I was a member of and was in An Khe the same time John was there. I can assure John that when we went out during that time the teams that I went out with were making contact. Most missions were set for 4 to 5 days and most of the time we were back within 2 days due to our teams initiating contact and getting confirmed kills, even through as John stated we were primarily 4 man teams sent out for recon purposes and not as ambush teams. John looks familiar to me from the picture in the book, I also had the utmost respect for the guys in Charlie Co. and had no problem looking them in the eye and saying hello as I walked by. I also thought they had the same respect for me as a fellow Ranger but I guess I was wrong. Outside of this portion of the book I thought it was very good and strongly recommend it.
