a jewish Kempis: This was a favorite that sold a half million in the sixties. Viet Nam probably killed the interest. The insights of Liebman are surprising. If you like to think a problem down to its roots, please do not miss Liebman. Written for mature minds, it is pure intellectual gold.
Thoughts that have stood time's test: I am reading the (sixth) printing of this book..which my dad read in 1946! Its theme is ageless, and it should be widely read today! If we could only attain self control of our own minds...enough so as to follow the recipe Dr Liebman has proposed....what glorious peace would be within us! I am ordering copies to give as gifts...hoping to share the joy of reading this book with my dearest friends and my children this holiday season. I am so happy to find it actively traded and shared 55 years later!
Peace of Mind by Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman: This is a complete work on the behavioral aspects of the human condition. The author describes the good life, mastering passions, personal unity, the true self and acceptance of personal imperfections. The author believes that we must learn to love or perish. He points to simple human needs consisting of acceptance, approval and companionship. Democracy is defined as tolerance in political relations. Insecurity is seen as a manifestation of prior and perhaps continuing inadequacies. The work encourages us to accept ourselves and others with limitations and imperfections. The author defines the inner human core of the soul, nervous system, mind and an inner strength which binds the various components. Finally, he encourages us to remove inner insecurities by buttressing our individual and collective self esteem. This is an important work in promoting successful human relations.
Peace is Only When There Is No Mind: . I'm adding to this review of June 19, 2002 to clarify what I have quoted below, a review made by Osho. In his review, he is not attacking Jewry or of the mind or of peace, but rather the argument is of obtaining peace of mind. The idea against peace of mind is this: the mind is like the body, both are not the person but are peripheries. It is the consciousness, or the no-mind, the higher self that is what is real. And even this higher self can be dissolved into a collective consciousness. The point being is that the Western psychoanalysts, including this book of Liebman, is that the mind can be healed and made healthy, cured to find peace. But the argument against this is that the mind is only a moving process. Like walking, it is a verb, the legs are the reality. The mind too, is only a process of moving thoughts. To stop thinking for a mere moment and one can perceive a glimpse of his or her consciouness. This is who we are, not our minds. So while Liebman argues for peace of mind, Osho and the East will argue that the mind itself is the desease, it cannot be healed to find peace. Peace only exists with the ability to leave the mind and perceive the higher self, the consciousness, the part of us that exists outside of rational and logical thought systems. There is no peace of mind. There is however, peace of no-mind. And Osho's review: I have read one book entitled Peace of Mind, by a Jewish rabbi, Joshua Liebman. I have gone through the whole book; the man knows neither about peace nor does he know about the mind. But he is a businessman. He has done a good job without knowing anything about peace of mind. His book is one of the best sellers in the world because whoever wants peace of mind is bound to sooner or later find Joshua Liebman's book. And he has written it beautifully. He is a good writer, very articulate, impressive; you will be influenced by it. But peace of mind will remain as far away as it was before, or it may even have gone further away by your reading this book. In fact, if a man knows what peace is, and what mind is, he cannot write a book entitled Peace of Mind, because mind is the cause of all unpeace, all restlessness. Peace is when there is no mind. So peace of mind - no commodity like this exists. If mind is there then peace is not. If peace is there, then mind is not. But ot write a book "Peace of No Mind" - nobody is going to purchase it. . . It will not make sense to most people. OSHO
Not easy to find, worth the search: I borrowed and read this book more than 20 years ago and the lesson has stayed with me. Of all the things that I believe I desire, the only thing that will sustain me always is peace of mind. Beyond health, wealth, and happiness, I need to be at peace with myself. This book gave me insight into how to maintain my peace during the times that my world was in turmoil. It is not about religion or even "self help", it is about shared human experience and the spirit's desire. I have been looking for a copy of this book for myself since the day I returned the one I read. I find it ironic that I have literally spent decades looking for "Peace of Mind" when I already know that the only place to find it is in myself. I still hope to find a copy of it for myself one day. I wish you peace.
