From Amazon.com: Joey Pigza has problems. Big problems. He was emotionally abused by his grandmother. He has never met his dad. He can't get along in his elementary school classroom because of his mood swings and his "dud meds." We gradually see that Joey must have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), which is not being effectively controlled with his current medication. Joey's life is a terrifying roller-coaster ride, and Jack Gantos, author of the Rotten Ralph books, drags the reader along to see what life is like with ADD. The story is written from the boy's point of view in a sharp, worried style that veers out of control when Joey does. Joey's control of his own behavior slips away as we read, horrified to see this boy trying to get a grip on his life and failing. He disrupts the class field trip; he puts his finger in a pencil sharpener and injures himself; he swallows his house key. Then he runs through the classroom holding open sharp scissors. When he trips and falls, seriously injuring a classmate, he is transferred to a special-education program in another school. Here, thankfully, he encounters a caring teacher who recommends further medical evaluation, and Joey is eventually able to return to his former school. There is hope for Joey on the last page--he sits in the Big Quiet Chair to read. Gantos has achieved an unusual feat with this book. We want to turn away from Joey's shifting prison of emotions. But for those who stick with him, he shows us what his life is like. We walk a mile in his shoes, our feet hurting all the way. For young readers touched by ADD--and for their teachers and parents--Joey gives us the key to his world. (Ages 10 and older) --Marcie Bovetz
how dumb can you be to swallow a key: the book joey pigza swallows the key is a very good book. the reason this is a good book is because you never now what joey is going to do because it all matter on weather he toke his meds or not
Just Voice: (This review is in the voice of the character.) Hi, I'm Joey Pigza. "Some say I'm wired bad, some say I'm wired glad, some say I'm wired mad...but everyone agrees, I'm wired!" Read about me in my book, Joey Pigza Swallowed The Key. You're sure to love it! My adventures will make you buzz like busy bees. Your body will tingle when I forget to take my meds. You might relate me to your little brother or your phyco neighbor. I bounce off the walls and break things wherever I go. My book will make you laugh out loud. You'll love it when I stick my finger in the sharpener or eat shoofly pie. You might not want to buy this book, but it would be good if you borrowed it from your local library. Thanks, Joey Pigza
Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key: Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key is an okay book. Joey Pigza is a kid who has ADD. He was living with his grandma until his mom came back. His grandma left and his mom took care of him from then on. His mom worked every day and when he got home from school she was still working. So his mom decided to give him a house key, bad idea. A few days later he was at school playing around with his key and he swallowed it. After his regular teacher saw that happen she sent him to the Special Ed room.
Joey Pigza Soars Like a Roller Coaster: Joey Pigza is a kid in Ms. Maxy's 3rd grade class. He is suffering from ADH, and his life is like a soaring roller coaster. Originally, he lived with his somewhat abusive and also hyperactive Grandmother. Their house always looked like a tornado hit it. He had a very hard time at school. He had no friends. Since he could not sit still for 5 seconds, he always got in trouble. One day he sharpened his finger in a pencil sharpener. A big change occurred when his mom came back into his life, and his grandmother moved away. Joey has never met his Dad. One day he swallowed his house key, so he went to a Special Ed class for a little bit of the day. One day at school Joey was making bumper stickers for he and his mom to change the world. So he took Ms. Maxis big teacher scissors to cut the stickers out. He was running with them and tripped and cut off the tip of the nose of one of his classmates. He was sent to a Special Ed school to help him with his problem. They had to do a brain test to make sure that Joey got the right medication. Joey met new people and learned about his condition. He got to go back to his old school in Ms.Maxy's class. I think Jack Gnats did a great job on this book. Out of all the books that I have ever read this was the best one. I am ten years old in the fourth grade.
