Delivers what it promises: Despite what other reviewers apparently think, this is a book about techniques: applying watercolor techniques or oil techniques to acrylics, making use of gels, using metallics, painting transparently or opaquely, and so on. And as such, the book succeeds quite well. Quiller's style has nothing at all to do with the techniques themselves; he isn't saying "paint like me!" He is simply showing his own examples -- lots of great examples -- of the techniques he presents. If you want a book that tells you how to paint in a particular style, this isn't the book for you. But if you want a good source of techniques that can be applied to acrylics -- using your own style of painting -- this book delivers.
One trick pony: This book contains a good color wheel and some useful discussion about material, but that's about it. The art is extremely idiosyncratic, stylized, and modern, and it is not very appealing. What's more, it appears that the author only has command of one style/genre, and that won't be of much help people who are trying to learn. Spend your money on The North Light Book of Acrylic Painting Techniques instead.
Not for the beginning acrylic artist: I found this book to be very helpful in experimenting with new ideas for my paintings. However, it is not for the beginning artist. This book shows various techniques but it won't show you how to paint a picture step by step
This book stinks: Personally, I really really dislike this book. But, that doesn't mean that everyone would not like this book. Personally I am a realist. I want to create realistic pictures, and I've been doing that in pencils for awhile now. Now I want to move onto acrylics, and so I decided acrylics would be nice. They don't take forever to dry, i've seen some nice detailed stuff with them, and from the 2 paintings I've done without instruction I was pretty satisfied. So, i figured I'd get a book to help me with the techniques. I figured that it would show various styles and the different techniques used to achieve the different results. Nope, it's all impressionism. Very very impressionistic, at that. Now, if you're trying to learn how to paint impressionism, then this book is certainly for you. It goes very in depth on those techniques, covers all the different types of paints, mixed media, the difference between acrylics brands, gels, glosses, has various exercises, painting watercolor-ish, easel painting techniques, textures,...etc. I don't remember anything about painting people or skin tones though.
Acrylic painting techniques/ how to master medium: This is aa very inspirational book worth every penny I paid for it. I am very happy with the paintings I've produced, after reviewing the techniques in this book. Very refreshing!
