[.ca] On Compiling an Annotated Bibliography (ISBN 0873529790)

On Compiling an Annotated Bibliography:
Although Harner's brief pamphlet (originally published in 1985 and revised in 1991) concentrates on language and literature and is primarily concerned with bibliographies of individual writers, its advice applies to broader bibliographic projects. He specifies the temperament and qualifications needed for bibliographic work (infinite patience, attention to detail, stamina, knowledge of software that will assist in compilation, and the willingness to work without notice or reward) and at many points gives useful advice about how to negotiate through library procedures and restrictions. His recommendations relating to planning before compilation begins, actual compilation of entries and writing of annotations, final proofreading, indexing, and writing prefatory matter can be read with profit by any prospective bibliographer. Harner properly advises waiting until the file is complete before beginning the index, when records are assembled and indexing needs can be seen more clearly. Essential reading for any scholar or student thinking of compiling an annotated bibliography.
