From Amazon.com: Far more than a collection of folk recipes, this excellent reference book explains everything from the nature of disease to descriptions of herbs and the areas of the body they affect to preparations for tinctures, teas, infusions, and plasters, all in an easy to follow format. The herbs discussed are not hard to find. Herbal therapies for more than 140 diseases are catalogued, and the three indexes in this meticulously organized book cover general information, diseases, and herbs. Readers interested in herbology and traditional homeopathy will find this an invaluable resource.
One herbalism book: If you only get one herbal book, this is the one to get. I have owned, used and abused this book for about six years. It is very thorough and has a very wide range of herbs along with "recipes" for specific conditions. I love this book so much I gave one to my mom for the holidays.
Natural Healing for Herbs: A Complete Manual for Herbal Use: NATURAL HEALING WITH HERBS by Humbart Santillo, B.S., M.H., is one of the finest and most comprehensive herbal resource books I've ever seen. Not only does it include every conceivable herbal supplement one could need to look up, but it provides multiple indexes, including an index of diseases. There are also over a dozen chapters that discuss health and disease and herbal therapies in depth, including: 1. The Nature of Health and Disease; 2. Diagnosis; 3. Herbal Therapies and Their Application; 4. Methods of Using Herbs; 5. The Course of Herbal Therapy: Dosage, Duration & Rest Periods; Healing Crises; Keeping the Disease Under Control; Translating Traditional Herb Preparations; 6. Herbal Properties; 7. Commonly Used Herbs; 8. Herbal Formulations; 9. Diet & Cleansing; 10. Enemas; 11. Hydrotherapy; 12. Homeopathy; 13. Comprehensive Therapies for Common Ailments. There are also many charts, figures, and diagrams to help you to find the best herbal supplement for your needs and understand how to use them most efficaciously. Well worth the investment; you will find yourself turning to this resource book often!
My NUMBER ONE Reference: I have close to 100 books on herbs, and whenever I need something this is the FIRST one I grab! I have several copies at home, one at work and one for traveling around. I can't recommend this book highly enough!!! It has a one-of-a-kind chart included which is pure gold! I've never seen a chart that is so useful! The only drawback I've found in this book is the lack of some of the Rain Forest herbs, such as Pau d'Arco and Cat's Claw, which I would dearly love to see Smokey's write-ups on. This book includes a section on herbs, a section on illnesses, a section on diet and cleansing, as well as a section for learning about herbology which includes invaluable information on herbal actions. This herb book is great for beginners and professionals alike. I have read all of Smokey's books and would unhesitatingly recommend them all.
Cult of Santillo: I'm not normally one to gush, but could this book have been written any better? The only thing that I regret about this book is that it doesn't have Smokie's John H. on the inside cover. I am studying to become an N.D., myself. Smokey has the information in this one book that I have gotten out of three texts. It's kept simple, full of info and instructive. Love the graphs, too. Me likey.
Best Herbal 'Bible' anywhere!: I've owned this book for about 15 years, and it's one I DON'T lend out to anyone! It's one of the most comprehensive, well written, best organized books I have ever had the pleasure of referencing. If you're serious about learning about herbs, this is the book for you! I've refered to it many times to learn herbal properties, as well as looking up herbs for certain ailments. I can't praise it highly enough!
