A Great Learning Tool: In the ashes of Hollywood I have found it hard to find a decent filmmaking book that does not contain any offensive material. I must say that this book does have a few spots that could have been left out (they include one visual example, one full example by Ms. Begleiter, and a one word of profanity). Yet this book is 224 pages in length and out of those I found only 3 pages that had something offensive, that's only 1.3% of the book, and for Hollywood that is fairly amazing. Yet it is still 1.3% too much. I am amazed however how helpful and informative this book is. I have yet to find a filmmaking book which has explained as much material as in this book in such an understandable way. For those interested in creating films to glorify our Lord, yet lack a clean way to learn, this book is one step in the right direction.
clearly written useful & well structured information: I am a professionally trained graphic designer who works in film and I already did a lot of storyboarding for film and commercials before I came across this helpful book. There 's a lot of useful stuff for every professional level, especially in this kind of trade where most have to teach themselves. Basic explanations on drawing people and camera angles, more advanced tips & tricks to finetune your workflow, great chapters on camera setup & move vocabulary and inspiring illustrations and storyboard art. The adding of personal recollection of the writer's storyboarding career makes it a fun and interesting read. If you want to improve your storyboarding skills (and communication-with-directors-skills), buying this book will definitely pay off.
best book on storyboarding: From word to image Marcie Begleiter Storyboarding and the filmmaking process This is the best book to have on storyboarding. As Chair of the Digital Media dept. at Otis College of Art and Design, I read and review tons of books to see if they would be of use for our undergrads and graduates. Though there are several books that cover storyboarding, none are as effective nor as useful. This goes beyond a mere lesson in the formatting of a storyboard. There is a deep understanding of the subject because Marcie is a long-time professional feature film storyboard artist. The book does cover the feel and look of a storyboard, yet it goes beyond that by providing examples from the grand history of film. Just one of the nice features of the book is the excellent list of DVDs that contain storyboard examples and visualization documents. Marcie tells you what a storyboard is for, how to make one, how to make them effective and then even how to get a gig as a storyboard artist. It is all here for you.
Storyboarding: "This is a good book to read if you want to understand the value of storyboarding in the filmmaking process." -- RMS
A wholesome introduction: A very good introduction to storyboarding. If you want general but honestly detailed account of how it's like being a storyboard artist, this book is for you. However it's not really a "how-to" book, but better! This book made me more interested in storyboarding, and convinced me of its importance for a variety of fields: movies, tv, animation, and even video games.
