[.ca] Vampire Apocalypse: A World Torn Asunder (ISBN 097679148X)

The Last and Greatest Struggle has Begun:
The future is bleak: humans have ravaged the earth of its oil supply, and now they are paying the price. Towns live in complete darkness, without enough energy to power a single computer. Amid this bleak existence, there is another threat to human existence, one that has always been there but only now, in the blackness of a powerless world, dares to show its face. Vampires are killing or drugging into submission anyone who disobeys them. They are a fearsome army whose only weakness seems to be the light of day. But as dawn breaks, the last remaining humans have another army to worry about--the Thralls. Thralls are humans who have willingly submitted to their new masters - the vampires. In payment for their loyalty and protection during the day, the Thralls, have been rewarded with great strength and an appetite for killing that is nearly as great as the vampires themselves. This is the world that John Harris has lived in for the past two years, fighting Thralls by day and vampires by night. He is part of the resistance: the last of the humans who refuse to submit to the vampires' rule. His world is one filled with mighty and dangerous battles and little or no hope for a future. Derek Gunn is an Irish horror writer who has published several short stories in high profile works. Vampire Apocalypse is his first stab at a full-length novel, and it fails to disappoint. It is packed to the brim with bloody battles and epic struggles. Unlike your traditional vampire book, this is about a fight to survive, and the few people left on earth who are willing to take part in this fight, knowing that most have no hope of survival. I would recommend it to those who like a good war-themed book and to anyone who enjoys an exciting and bloody vampire tale. Spinetinglers has only one minor criticism: as with most war books, it fails to establish some of the characters at times. A few flashbacks might have helped the reader to understand what led these characters to stand up and fight against the greatest threat that the earth has ever seen. Despite this, Vampire Apocalypse is a great book filled thrilling battle sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat and might even make you a bit more energy conscious (if this is what happens when the oil runs out, believe me you wouldn't want to live in this dark world where technology is a thing of the past)!
