Amazon.ca: Graphic designer and joyous rhymer Loris Lesynski's popular picture book Boy Soup: or When Giant Caught Cold presents a delightfully silly story that--despite its theme--is more likely to inspire giggles than nightmares. Clever Kate, a girl accidentally kidnapped along with the boys Giant needs to make the broth prescribed to cure his sniffles, finds a way to convince Giant that what he needs is a soup brewed by boys--not one featuring them as an ingredient. Kate and the boys then trick Giant into letting them make him a particularly nasty potion: They put in some mud and some thick yellow glue and a generous dollop of dandruff shampoo. The children make their escape while Giant tries to eat the mess, and in the end the monster even learns a valuable lesson. Boy Soup marks Lesynski's picture-book debut, which she has since followed up with titles including Ogre Fun and Catmagic. (Ages 4 to 7) --Deirdre Hanna
A great read-aloud.: When my grandchildren (ages 7 and 4) come to visit this is the first book they ask for. We all have it memorized by this time but we never fail to get a new laugh each time. Identifying the revolting ingredients of the soup gives us a nice long pause in the middle.
