This book actually works!: I used the book the other day to find the falls in Waterdown, Ontario; the description of the falls and how to get there was accurate to a T! Over the next year or two I intend to use this easily understandable guide to check out every waterfall I can in Ontario. Even if you don't like to travel much or live in Ontario and just like looking at pretty pictures of waterfalls, I would highly recommend this book.
Excellent overview of province's waterfalls: Few people in Ontario, much less the rest of Canada, realize there are substantial waterfalls outside of the west, north and, perhaps, Quebec. This book goes a long way toward rectifying that. Author Mark Harris divides the province into 5 districts -- Algoma, cottage country, Golden Horseshoe (around the western end of Lake Ontario), Lake Huron and Ottawa Valley -- and uses George Fischer's mostly excellent colour photographs to show us what this province has to offer. Together, they cover at least 100 waterfalls, including more than a dozen in the Hamilton/Ancaster area (who knew an area best known for steel mills has such natural wonders?) Each waterfall has a two-page spread including detailed driving instructions, fact boxes including rating, size and nearest settlement, plus a short essay on the waterfall and its history. Is the book useful? You bet. It quickly became my prime resource when I want to photograph waterfalls. (Another resource:Waterfalls The Niagara Escarpment, by Jerry Lawton and Mikal Lawton. The pictures aren't as good, but it's still quite useful).
