[.ca] ABC of Canada (ISBN 1553373405)

Amazon.ca:
Where but in a Canadian alphabet book would "Z" be for "Zamboni"? Per-Henrik Gürth and Kim Bellefontaine's ABC of Canada is full of references to unusual national icons like the ubiquitous ice-cleaning truck of the local skating arena. While hardly the first book of its kind to celebrate the Canadian experience, this charming and well-conceived thematic ABC promises to help children with their letters at the same time as it imparts a sense of the vastness and variety of the Great White North. Gürth, a graphic designer and illustrator with more than a dozen children's books to his name, uses boldly outlined shapes and bright colours to attract the eye of preschool readers. His computer-generated childlike images also feature a host of appealing animals, including beavers, bears, and a moose. The text, by Gürth's wife, Kim Bellefontaine, is simple but eminently readable with lots of entertaining sound effects, such as the "Brrr!" of ice fishing on a frozen lake and the "Yee haw!" of watching the Calgary Stampede. (Her choice of "x-country skiing" for the letter X, however, seems rather uninspired.) With its blend of familiar symbols (flag, lobster, Mountie), place names (Peggy's Cove, Toronto, Yukon) and activities (hockey, kayaking), ABC of Canada will not only interest Canadian preschoolers but also the youngest of our tourists. (Ages 2 to 6) --Lisa Alward

Illustrations are gorgeous and depict Canada from A to Z:
This book lists everything from A to Z that make up our wonderful country of Canada. From the artic to the zamboni, and everything in-between (from Peggy's Cove to Quebec, Calgary Stampede, to maple syrup) it's all listed right here. Your child will love the gorgeous, bright color illustrations, which makes the book so lovely. A great early reading book to share with your child.

Canadian living in the US...:
I recently gave this book to my American friend at her baby shower.. Everyone loved it and wondered where they could buy one.. This book outlines all the great things about Canada (ie: H for Hockey)... Too funny! A simple book with beautiful bright colors and pictures...

Great Introductory Reader for Canadian Kids:
My two year old daughter loved this book when I brought it home, and it has remained a favourite over the last 8 months. The illustrations are great, the choices of words contain a good mix of things and places (all very Canadian) - I recommend it highly!

A Great Find for Young Readers:
This book is a great book for youngsters. While its immediate impact would be on early readers due to its effectiveness in reinforcing the alphabet and helping them learn about Canada in a simplistic format, I think upper elementary and even some lower junior high readers can appreciate its sentiments. Even adults who enjoy a good picture book can enjoy this read. A great gift for up and coming readers! Looking for something similar with a little more depth and a higher reading level for older readers- try M is for Maple by Mike Ulmer.

ABC Kids Book:
We received this book as a gift. My son loves it and has taken it to Show and Tell at school several times. His favorite is the letter Z.
