[.ca] Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing (ISBN 1584231130)

Stecyk does it again:
After elevating the development of skateboarding from criminal activity to its proper place in modern culture with Dogtown and Z-Boys Stecyk, a long-time contributor to The Surfer's Journal, presents the artifacts of surfing culture in an equally intelligent manner. This book is developed from the recent exhibition at the Laguna Arts Museum. A must have for anyone interested in surfing. Steyck has come a long way from epoxying bronzed roadkill to major California roadways. He's an artist too.

Great Content... Poor Design:
If you're looking for a good book on the art history of surfing and surf culture, unfortunately this is NOT it. "Surf Life 32 to 02" by Tom Adler & Quiksilver is a much more accurate depiction of surf history and culture... which is tastefully presented. "Surf Culture The Art History of Surfing" could have been an excellent representation of the Surf Culture art exhibit if it wasn't for the EXTREAMLY poor editorial design by David Carson! Pure and utter chaos! What a waste! What was he thinking? Books are for reading, not for designers to "express" themselves... not to such a chaotic extent anyway. "We Approach Our Martinis with Such High Expectations" by Jamie Brisick is an excellent read on surfing as well. Perhaps Jamie can give David some lessons on what real art is.
