[.ca] Routing for Beginners: Revised and Expanded Edition (ISBN 1861083181)

From Amazon.com:
A router is one tool that most do-it-yourselfers can get by without. Let's face it--it's possible to build lots of things (bookshelves, desks, etc.) without ever picking up this specialized tool. But each one of those projects will look a lot better and, in some cases, last a lot longer with just a few sweeps of this small yet powerful tool. Anthony Bailey's Routing for Beginners opens with a thorough introduction to the router and offers suggestions for picking the right model based on your intended use--whether your ultimate goal is to cut lock mortises, round the edges of a handrail, or create your own moldings and picture frames. Readers are quickly put to work using a router to build shop accessories, including a clever way to store router cutters, a portable storage case, a large worktable, and a router table. Techniques for creating jigs and templates, the devices that help make accurate and repetitive cuts, are also covered. Bailey's description of joints, however, is probably the section that will be most educational for readers. As he covers a variety of joints, including tongue and groove, half lap, mortise and tenon, lock miter, and dovetailing, Bailey explains how routers can be used to make two pieces of wood literally "fit" together, rather than simply butting up next to each other. The book ends with instructions for a few do-it-yourself projects, complete with a list of needed materials and tools. It obviously takes more than a router to complete these projects--shelves, an entertainment center, a computer desk, and headboard--but each project gives the user a better appreciation for this versatile tool. --John Russell

Disappointed:
Hmmm. I was looking for a worthwhile book offering tips, jigs, and general routing knowledge. Not here. First, the book is British. Not a bad thing if you're British, but I was hoping to read about American products and practices. Second, what's here is just flat out weak. I'm being generous by giving it 2 stars.
