heartwarming and touching: I had this book as a child and it was one of my favorites. I'm very happy to see it back in print. It teaches love and kindness towards animals. I recently got the second printing that comes with a forward about the author. The artwork is also beautiful. Fletcher is a very sweet heartwarming story. It will brings tears to my eyes. I think this will make a nice gift to children of all ages.
Sweet, sweet book!: As an elementary teacher, I'm surprised this book is not more popular today. I remember it from my childhood as being my very favorite picture book, partly because we had a dog like Fletcher. Fletcher demonstrates an intense devotion and insecurity about his mistress's love for him. He's jealous of the chickens she raises. To solve this problem, he gets his friends to build a gigantic egg around him, hoping to get her attention by resembling the eggs/chickens she dotes upon. It's a creative way to solve his problem. I plan to use the book in my classroom to illustrate point of view, problem solving, cooperation and character's feelings. (Plus I just like any story that's about a dog!)
Just a genuinely nice story!: This book is a lot of fun for kids - a dog hatching from an egg...how silly! The story also conveys a beautiful message that you don't have to *do* anything to be loved, just be yourself. Wonderful illustrations. My mother read this book to my sister and I when we were children and it remains one of our all time favorites.
How Fletcher Was Hatched!: This was one of my favorite books as a child. I was so excited to read it to my own son. I have my original hardcover from 1969 that I recently discoved in an old box. What a find! I still laugh when I read it. Do yourself and your children a favor and get this book.
... fond memories of childhood: This book reminds me of childhood. My mother would read it to my sister and I. It's such an innocent story about wanting to be loved. I'm really glad that it is still being published and that Amazon.com had it in their available texts. After skimming the many positive comments here, don't you think that this would be the perfect book for your son or daughter?
