[.ca] The Secret of Gabi's Dresser (ISBN 1896764150)

Good for youngsters interested in the Holocaust:
I consider The Secret of Gabi's Dresser by Kathy Kacer as a good choice for kids interested in reading historical fiction about the Holocaust. The book is based on an event which happened to Ms. Kacer's mother as a child in Czechoslovakia. The story line focuses on the feelings of the young girl and is easy to understand and follow. The reader learns about Gabi's life, some of her family's Jewish traditions, and how her life changes when the Nazis take control of her country and influence the people (anti-semetism). She loses her best friend who is not Jewish and is forced out of school. Eventually, she if forced to hide in the dresser when tthe soldiers search her house. There is no direct physical violence in this book although the underpinnings of the war and the Holocaust are always present for those who know about them. It is fairly fast to read and should sustain most readers.

Touching, and Beautifully Told:
This is a truly stunning piece of writing that never becomes self-pitying. The story is told in a truthful, strong manner, and in a way that makes it approachable to all generations. Lyrical, and touching, this is an important piece of literature.

The best book ever!!:
The book, The secret of gabi's dresser by Kathy Kacer is about a girl who lives happily in Chechosliovakia untill nazis invated their country. This book has won the silver birch award, is amazing and i enjoyed it. I think the book is amazing and exciting. It was amazing how thsi girl can fit into this small dresser. It was exciting how her family had to live in a barn for months with not alot of big movement. The book also teaches readers about the history of world war 2. Such as in world was 3 kids and parents were seperater from family. some people were left to die in gas chambers or sent to concentration camps. The author also writes in a way people can relate to her. There are other people in this world that had or hav grandparets, parents or themself that went trough the same. This book also hooks the readers attention and readers would not let go of the book. As i said before this book is made for young readers and teaches alot about the history. I also though this book was terriffc and i would recommend it to other people.
