[.ca] The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Skiing (ISBN 1932549226)

absolute sham:
This book should be called: A CURSORY LIST OF A FEW OUTDATED AND VERY BASIC WEIGHTLIFTING TECHNIQUES FOR NO SPORT IN PARTIULAR. Even if I don't like a book I don't normally take the time to return it. This book, however, is so bad and such a waste of money I'm returning it on principle. DON'T waste your money on this book. First, if for 20 bucks you think you're going to get a comprehensive weight training manual for skiing, think again. It's a 60 page "booklet" that looks like it was printed off the internet. Second, it has virtually nothing skiing specific in it - it merely goes through the various and very general free weight/machine exercises - which are far better covered in other books. What it really is, is a beginners weight lifting book for someone who has never spent time in a gym. For exampe, leg curls: it says, literally, "go to a machine, lie down, and curl your legs." I kid you not. Nothing about leg/foot position (which is important.) Nothing about other, far better ways of developing hamstring strength. Nothing about how important hamstring strength is for skiing, protecting the knee, etc. Just go to leg curl machine and curl. Give me a break. Third, one of the most imporant sets of exercises for skiing are the various kinds of squats and deadlifts - there are many, many kinds, and any book that proports to be "THE ULTIMATE GUIDE" should go into these techniques, their advantages, and so on. Instead, they show a single squatting technique (outdated, almost useless for skiing), and a single deadlift technique (ditto). Nor do they even explain, really, how to do these things -- which are fairly difficult techniques at that. I could go on and on. Just don't buy it.
