cult classic: All I have to say is if your a true monkees fan your wasting your time I'ts terrible. How ever if your a huge fan of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Shock Treatment,J-Men Forever and any movie that director Ed Wood did "except" Orgy Of The Dead (thats just asking for punishment.)than this movie is awsome. I don't under stand why Peter Tork is the star of the movie ,he's on the least compared to the other guyes.
Trippy: This is one great movie... Head the turning point in monkees history was not that great of a success in its time but has now become a cult classic... I personally love this movie because its trippy... like after u ate a crap load of shrooms yes... very fun... the monkees were known for being funny and with only 2 seasons of there show its not hard to see why they made this movie... Written by jack Nickelson, They start out with the mayor opening the new bridge, and the monkees come running threw and micky jumps off...then there are some mermaid who rescue him and etc.. they are inside a vacuum and stuff its really wierd... But this movie is not funny... Not at all like there show and the music is differnt on the show not at all like previous things... some monkee fans have been shocked but i was very excited to see it and was very Surprised afterward the movie had more meaning and was not just them running around like crazed freaks but this movie really makes you think and u have to watch it many times and u still will not fully understand Each time u watch it u notice something else... I suggest this movie to anyone Monkee fan or not
The film is 5 star.: Great film about the earlier days of corporate control. The film environments are in the spirit of independent culture before we were given Targets through non competitive means and the bad Taquerias and Nail saloons in bare buildings are increasingly what is allowed to stand in America. Even the use of the character actors on the San Fransico Bridge is a statement in today's world. Now we just get highly paid generic people who look good like in Friends. And they get to be near billionaires for their lack of specialized talent. OK yes people support Friends- but where is the alternative. Head is a statement on that. This is the music by The Monkees that is not made Tinny by Kershner's people. Like a cool universal version of Citizen Kane that also is 60s. Davey doesn't wail on the tambourine or do the bad scat singing either. But be warned: It is on Rhin$o so it is almost twice as much as it should cost- $10 which is far market value for a film of this length- even one of the few that is worth owning to watch over and over. As such I won't buy it because Rhin$o has created some MAJOR rip-offs in CDs and DVDs where the price is several times too high and they don't provide even close to market expectations for quantity of content. If we don't punish companies like Rhin$o through our pocketbooks for ripping us off then they will just get worse- more sloppy, more lazy, more greedy, more bloated. I bought Volume 2 of Gumbyand like an idiot took off the wrapper. Now I read the slams of the entire series on Amazon.com and realize I threw my money down the toilet again. I'm glad though because I will know to always check Amazon first. Never again. This is the company that expects you to pay $50 for 6 episodes of Laugh-In. It should be 30-40 episodes for $30-$35 or so bucks at discount. That is fair market price. The genie has been let out of the bottle. The days of 2 or 1 episode on VHS for $15-$30 is over. I already don't get remastered original broadcast ads with the shows, I should get a discount for missing out on them. Why is it that Lion's Gate nails how to do a DVD set and then price it with Saved By The Bell- despite lack of extras- and Rhin$o butchers everything. COMPANIES PAY ATTENTION: YOU MAKE A DVD MENU IN THE FORMAT AND STYLE OF THE ONE FOR THE SBTB DVD SET. THAT IS CORRECT. THE MENU FOR TWILIGHT ZONE IS A JOKE. BUT I DON'T BUY RIP-OFF PRODUCT SO I DON'T OWN THE TWILIGHT ZONE COLLECTIONS. I GOT OUTER LIMITS SEASON ONE INSTEAD. PEOPLE POST COMPANIES FOR MORE, DONE RIGHT, PRICED AT FAIR MARKET VALUE,QUANTITY OF CONTENT DVD SETS. DON'T BUY RIP-OFFS OR THE COMPANIES WILL NOT GIVE YOU WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. CASE IN POINT: 6 EPISODES OF LAUGH-IN FOR $50. THEY ARE PLAYING YOU FOR A SUCKER. ANOTHER EXAMPLE JET PINK OF THE PINK PANTHER BY MG$M. 8 CARTOONS AND NOTHING MORE. THEY SHOULD GIVE YOU 50 FOR ABOUT $30. $60 IF THEY WANT TO INCLUDE ABOUT 50ANT, INSPECTOR, TOAD CARTOONS. DON'T BE A SUCKER AND GET RIPPED OFF. EVEN IF YOU DON'T MIND THE INFLATION YOU GET FAR LESS CONTENT AND GUESS WHAT THEY DON'T GIVE IT TOO YOU LATER. PEOPLE DON'T BUY AND THERE IS NO DECISION TO MAKE MORE. MORAL: DON'T BUY DVD SETS IF THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE DON'T GET IT RIGHT. IF ENOUGH PEOPLE FOLLOW THIS ADVISE THINGS WILL GET BETTER. AND PLEASE DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM BB$C UNTIL THEY SHAPE UP. THEY NEED TO RE-RELEASE EVERYTHING OVER. ON THE OTHER HAND THE SIMPSONS 3RD SEASON WAS DONE RIGHT (EXCEPT FOR TWO SCREENS FOR THE MENU) EVEN THOUGH I THINK THE BOX IS ONLY SEMI COOL AND KIND OF TACKY. BUT OTHERWISE THE SET IS A BLUEPRINT. IT IS ABOUT $5-$10 OVER FAIR MARKET VALUE BUT THIS IS FULLY EXCUSABLE BECAUSE IT CONTAINS SO MANY COOL IDEAS FOR EXTRAS. I HAVE YET TO USE THEM SO I CAN'T SAY HOW MUCH I WILL LIKE THEM. BUT THE EXTRAS MAKES THE INFLATED PRICE NOT INFLATED. MOST OTHER SETS HAVE FEW OR ZERO EXTRAS.
The Definitive Anti-Masterpiece: When this film was made the career of the Monkees was already in decline as their show had been cancelled and their music was no longer charting ('Porpoise Song' from the "Head" soundtrack got up to number 62 on Billboard). The group was tired of their squeaky clean image as the 'Pre-Fab Four', and they just wanted out. This film was conceived in an effort to reach out to more adult audiences, and to hasten their departure from the scenes as the prototype MTV 'boy band'. The film itself is a quirky, stream of consciousness movie that treads the line between anti-war statement film to over the top comedy in scenes where, for instance, they have to frolic on the scalp of Victor Mature (in a sequence known as 'dandruff') and are subsequently sucked into a giant vacuum cleaner by Victor Mature's hairdresser. There is no plot as such, but there is some redeeming social commentary such as when Frank Zappa tells Davy that he needs to work on his music more (but compliments his dancing, done with Toni Basil). At the end of the scene Frank Zappa's cow offers her opinion of the Monkees, in a scene that must be my favorite of the movie. Some of the music is great, with the Nesmith tune 'Circle Sky' getting top mention. It's a great song, filmed live in a scene designed to show how the boys had been devoured by their public image. Other musical numbers are a bit lacking, particularly 'Daddy's Song' and 'As We Go Along.' Highlights in the film are in the cameos. Not only do Toni Basil and Frank Zappa put in appearances, so do boxer Sonny Liston (who fights Davy), Terry Garr (who pleads to have poison sucked from her finger), Annette Funicello (who pleads tearfully with Davy in a love interest scene), and Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper in a cantina scene. Most peculiar of all credits are for writers and producers, namely longtime Monkees collaborator Bob Rafelson, and Jack Nicholson, who later collaborated on "Five Easy Pieces" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice", among other projects. There are also extras consisting of theatrical trailers, including one in Portuguese, and television ads for the film. The film was essentially not promoted, certainly didn't connect with the typical Monkee demographic, and was a disaster at the box office. This didn't trouble the band, as it gave them a clear path out, with Peter quitting very shortly after the movie was released. This is as unlike the Monkees TV show as can be imagined, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a trippy sixties flashback stranger than most any other. I was fortunate enough to see this in a theater, and have loved it ever since. I recommend the film to people who know about the Monkees or just think they do. I guarantee that it will shatter your preconceived notions of the band.
Head is a trip!: What is so unique about HEAD is that it's dreamlike in a way that few movies are. A uniquely crafted film inspired by the underground films of the 50s & 60s. Few movies manage to be entertaining solely on the strength of editing, but here a series of dreamsequences are seemlessly strung together in a fun and innovative way. The most revolutionary part has to be the way the beginning and end sequences were connected by the events between them yet are the same scene with only slight variations. Huh? As the Monkees put it, "when you see the end in sight the beginning may arrive". How they do it is masterful. If you try to make sense of this movie, you'll be missing the point. The best thing to do is just mellow out before you watch it and allow HEAD to mess with your head a little. It will if you give it a chance and that makes for a truly rewarding viewing experience. Outside of the Monkees trying to escape their manufactured image, nothing really makes sense in this strange little movie. However, criticising HEAD for it makes about as much sense as critising your dreams for being equally strange and nonsensical. Where comedy is concerned, HEAD is not funny in a humorous way but rather in a peculiar way, similar to the way dreams have you saying, "what was that all about?" later on. If this had been a hit, it could have taken popular filmmaking in a whole new direction.
