From Amazon.com: The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to become a Christmas classic in the hearts and minds of generations to come, the film never really engages an audience, partially because Santa himself is merely a supporting player in the drama. Jeannot Szwarc (Supergirl, Jaws II) directs with a disabling lack of vision, and the special effects are terrible for such an expensive production. Sorry, but it's coals in the stocking for this flick. --Tom Keogh
for a movie based on a joyous occasion,i didn't find it very joyous: i don't know what to think about this movie.i didn't hate it but i didn't really like it either.here's why.i thought the whole atmosphere of the the movie was sad, almost depressing at times.and i felt the music overpowered the movie at times.it just got to be a bit too much.normally the colour scheme of a movie isn't something i think about.however, this movie seems to have colours that were much too muted for it's subject matter.the colours just weren't very bright.i'll admit that the movie approaches being something close to magical at times, but, for me,it doesn't quite get there.it's also slow paced.i think even children will be bored with it at times.for me,the movie was more of a loud spectacle than anything else.i don't think too many people will be filled with joy while watching this movie.it's bearable at best,at least in my opinion.my vote for Santa Claus:The Movie is a 2/5
The best Christmas film in the WORLD!!!: I think Santa Claus the Movie is one of the best Christmas films ever made and it's a shame that they have deleted this film from the UK shops. It has a great overview of how you should feel over the Christmas period and is entertaining for both children and adults. If you have not seen this film yet it is a must and a film that can be watched over and over again with out becoming tedious!!! It convinced me that Santa really lives in the North Pole???????
ENTERTAINING CHRISTMAS CLASSIC !!: ASIDE FROM JOHN LITHGOW, DUDLEY MOORE AND A BRIEF CAMEO BY BURGESS MEREDITH THE REST OF THE CAST WERE RELATIVELY UNKNOWN ACTORS.I DON'T KNOW IF DAVID HUDDLESTON WAS THE FIRST CHOICE FOR THE ROLE OF SANTA CLAUS, BUT ONE THING FOR SURE IS THAT HE WAS PERFECT IN THE ROLE OF SANTA CLAUS.DAVID HUDDLESTON WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE SANTA NOW AND FOREVER. ANCHOR BAY HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB WITH THE PICTURE AND SOUND.THE VIDEO TRANSFER IN WIDESCREEN IS TRULY AMAZING AND THE COLORS ARE OUTSTANDING, SPECIALLY IN THE TOY SHOP.THE NEW DIGITAL 5.1 SOUND GIVES THIS OLD HOLIDAY CLASSIC NEW LIFE.THIS 20TH ANNIVERSARY DVD EDITION IS FILLED WITH BONUS MATERIAL MAKING IT EVEN MORE FUN TO WATCH.THIS IS ONE CHRISTMAS MOVIE THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN WATCH AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Best Santa Ever!: The man who plays Santa in this movie is the cutest, sweetest, most magical Santa Claus ever captured on film. I swear to this day...this man IS the real Santa. They could not have done a better job in casting this film. I get goosebumps every time they show Santa take off in the sleigh for the first time. Outstanding movie!!
