Essential History:
Why is this recording of the BBC Apollo 11 coverage important? Contrary to what MTV says, Woodstock was not the most historic event of the summer of 1969. Astronauts, not hippies or rock stars were the real idealists, dreamers, and heroes to most of the worlds youth. The made for television and Hollywood cinematic portrayals of the 1960's have created a distorted perception of a fascinating decade. Only a tiny minority of the U.S. youth was involved in or even interested in the so-called "movement". Most of us were more interested in football, basketball, and the fascinating mysteries of the opposite sex. We could have cared less about the antics of the smelly long-hairs who declared themselves social revolutionaries whilst all the time clinging to their parents financial teats. Most of us just wanted to finish school and find a job so that we could buy a car or rent a nice apartment. This BBC historical record captures some of the feel of that fantastic week when men walked on the moon. It is an essential item for all people who are interested in real history.
