when haven't these women been bad: i grew up on the maurice white/earthh,wind & fire era emotions which wrecked things up.and a couple of years ago i found this disc and was equally blown away.with the stax crew and Issac hayes & david porter this set has great songs on it.anything by these women is a must have.
Little Known Soul Classics from a Well-known group: Some really beautiful, if obscure stuff from the Emotions' early days with Stax Records. "So I Can Love You" was DESERVEDLY a big hit in the South on Black radio stations in 1969, but is surprisingly not that well remembered today. This is a song you will not be able to play without repeating at least once! "Heart Association," with it's breathtaking climax and crescendo is a song you can really lose yourself into, especially if you have a headset on! "Shouting Out Loud" is the perfect song to put on after coming home from a hard day's work. You go girls!
First Ladies of Memphis Shoals !: It would be a mistake to call the EMOTIONS a one hit wonder group, however, let there be no mistake about it... SO I CAN LOVE YOU was definitely their greatest contribution to R & B... their first SINGLE for STAX, the first cut on this CD, its one of those tunes you might just find yourself playing over and over again... maybe you won't even make it past the first track... The other cuts represent great R & B too - - but to me they lack that five star distinction... anotherwords, you'll (well atleast I) enjoyed listening to them immensely but they lacked that edge that makes you play them over and over for days on end quality (even though tunes like SHOW ME HOW, WHEN TOMORROW COMES, YOU MAKE ME WANT TO LOVE YOU and TOYS TO BOYS can definitely beat almost any tune playing on the radio today)... So, if you're not already a huge fan, check out WATTSTAX (I forget if its I or II) - - and you can hear them do a great live performance of SO I CAN LOVE YOU) and also hear some of the other great soul groups of that era - - however, if you're simply looking to add another great soul group (and a few more great tunes) to your collection... you definitely won't be disappointed by this purchase.
Excellent examples of deliciously gritty, soul reaching R & B.: The Emotions are a group that has stood the test of time. These earlier offerings by various heavy hitting producers are fine examples of vocal diversity. So I can love you is an absolute masterpiece(Written and sang by Sheila Hutchinson when she was just a teen)produced by Issac Hayes and Dave Porter, this cut perfectly blends The Emotions' sweet soft vocals with the more gritty Stax sound. The result is an R & B classic.Show me how is torch singing at it's finest, the harmonies are perfection.Put a little love away is the finest example of everyone singing the lead that I have ever heard. The genetic harmony is amazing.Shouting out love is a bouncy, souful gem that sounds as if it were released yesterday. I highly recommend this CD and this group to any lover of world class R & B.
