[.ca] Comfort Zone

Vanessa's Greatest Album to date:
The Comfort Zone was Vanessa's very best recorded album of everything she has done so far. I was very, very disappointed that she did not follow-up the Comfort Zone with something else that I was for sure was going to be slamming. Instead, she did that album that had the song, "The Sweetest Day's", which was an o.k. song, but the album was not. I was for sure that her next album after Comfort Zone was going to make her a music superstar, but somebody dropped the ball on that follow-up, either Vanessa or her management team. As of this date, we have not heard any more recordings from Van - not even sure if she still has a record contract. Anyway, I like all of the songs on Comfort Zone, especially the balad, "Just for tonight", and the Isley Bros remake, "Work to do", that originally came out in 1972 for the Isley Bros, and of course the song, "Comfort Zone", which I loved to hear her sing.

Truthfully Strong:
For Vanessa Williams, her start really began to shine within the early 90's. She also had some other joy within her hands, with her then husband, Ramon Harvey, with their children. Nevertheless, what always really stood out for Vanessa, was the fact that she survived a tragic scandal, and shined her light a whole lot further. In this case, it was absolutely a breakthrough for her career. At the time, she already began launching a huge acting career, with a role in The Pick-Up Artist, and a short appearance in the cancelled television drama, Partners In Crime, but as time will continue to tell, this might've been her one and only hit at the time. Her 1991 album, The Comfort Zone, broke her through between the boundaries within the rankings of Pop and R & B. The songs blend in beautifully from Hip Hop, to smooth soul, with classic songs like Work To Do, and Save The Best For Last, which was Vanessa Williams first ever #1 hit song on the charts. The songs garnered several Grammy nominations, but she sadly lost those nods, to Unforgettable by Natalie Cole. It is kind of sad that all the radio stations only play one hit song from the album, Save The Best For Last, which may make people think Vanessa Williams is a one-hit wonder, but she isn't. A lot of people would only buy this because of that one song, because it stands out the most. Anyway, I suggest this record as an introduction to the sophisticated diva.

The Gal Is Awesome:
Ms. Williams has it all... brains... looks... talent. This album has enough of a variety to really see how versatile and talented she really is.

Classic 90s R & B:
Vanessa Williams' sophomore effort THE COMFORT ZONE is classic 90s R & B, at its best. Of course everyone knows the breakout ballad single "Save The Best For Last", a signature ballad which Vanessa sings beautifully. One would think the album would sound a lot like this, and yes, there's other great ballads, but a majority of the songs will make you want to get on your feet and dance along with the music. Other notable ballads include "Just For Tonight" and "Goodbye" which she shines on vocally yet again. Her rendition of "What Will I Tell My Heart" is showstopping, great vocals, very strong. She has the voice for broadway. Now onto the uptempos. The album opens with the title track which sets a good pace for the album. "Running Back To You" and "Work To Do" are the albums best uptempos. The album has that funky R & B vibe of the early 90s and this is definately an album to get if you're a fan of that era of music. Too bad Vanessa isn't doing any music now, it's a shame, she has so much talent, and she overcame so much. But she found more success in movies and broadway, which is part of what she is doing today. A great album.

COMFORTable in all zones:
Vanessa Williams is one of those artists that can fit snugly into many musical venues and this disc proves just that. From pop ballads ("Save the Best for Last" "Strangers Eyes" "Just for Tonight", among a few) to funky r & B (the Isley's "Work to Do") to dance ("Running Back to You" and "2 of a Kind") to supper club jazz ("What Will I Tell My Heart"), the singer deftly makes the respective transitions. She may have made history in more ways than one as the first BLACK Miss America but her vocal supremacy is much better than any crown that she could have donned. And she's not bad to look at, either!
