In The Beginning...:
My introduction to the Fastbacks, and not a bad one either. I would give it four and a half stars if possible, because it's not a total masterpiece but it is really, really good and probably one of my all time favorite CDs. Their music only gets better from here on, but this CD has a unique charm to it. It's very low-fi and simple. But the songs are catchy as hell and the delivery is enthusiastic, contrasting the sometimes dark and disillusioned lyrics. It's very pop-punk, but delivered with child-like female vocals and heavily influenced by 70s rock. Highlights, for me, include "Seven Days", "Wrong, Wrong, Wrong!", "In The Winter", and "See and Say". "K Street" is a classic, made famous by the excellent live version included on the documentary HYPE! (which is better, but the recording here aint bad either). Nice covers of "Set Me Free" and "Midnight Confessions" spice it up, too. The actual album 'And His Orchestra' is only eleven songs and fairly cohesive. This CD version is 20 tracks long, as they tack on a couple early EPs the band released at the end. As a result, it may seem a bit overlong, but I personally never tire of them. After this CD, I got ZUCKER, which is an excellent album of theirs too!

I've been a music collector for over thirty years, and I'd have to say that the Fastbacks are simply too damn good to be so unknown. (They, along with with an early 80's band called Yipes and a fantastic musician out west named Kyle Vincent, are my top 3 undiscovered treasures.) First heard of Fastbacks when I found their excellent cover version of the Raspberries "Go All the Way"; followed that up by checking out four of their videos over on Launch.com, and I was hooked. I've picked up as much of their music as I could get, and I just can't believe a band this talented isn't bigger than Fastbacks has become. Great songs written and played by Kurt, great vocals -occasionally astonishing harmonies- from Kim and Lulu. I just love them. I wish Fastbacks all the best; check them out if you can.
