whoops: Sorry, in my review I referred to the song "Birth Defect" on the cd but I meant "Driving Nowhere". It appears my brain was either suffering from a birth defect or it was driving nowhere... I'll have to work on that...
The most underrated and underappreciated album ever!!: Helmet is a perfect example of why we have all these weak, insignificant pop bands and the mass sheep of our consumers continue to buy those albums instead of listening to real geniune amazing bands like helmet. these guys were so ahead of there time its insane. this is one of the best albums ever made and so are there other ones. they continued to push the envelope and expand there sound while keeping true to there hardcore roots. if it wasnt for helmet there probably wouldnt be the hardcore bands that are out there today so buy this ablum and listen to one of the best albums you will ever hear.
Probably their best album. Very underrated: Helmet's last album (before they disbanded) is different from their earlier stuff like "Strap It On" and the widely influential "Meantime". The music hear is a little less heavy due to the departure of their guitarist (leaving only Page Hamilton to hold down the fort), and it's not quite as angry and violent. However, it's a lot more varied and accessable. Instead of raw noise-fests like "Unsung" and "In The Meantime", we get more punkish tunes like "Pure" and "Renovation". That doesn't mean that they softened completely. "Crisis King" Diet Aftertaste" among many others are still really heavy with agression (as well as guitar-slashings). Page's vocals are at their peak here as he experiments with more monotone melody (not a bad thing). And does it work? Certainly. Mixing it with the heavyness doesn't work too well, although it's better than those irritating shouts he did earlier. His guitar comes in perfectly; no thin sound to be found here. The drumming isn't quite as good like it was on "Wilma's Rainbow", but he certainly knows what he is doing. As for lyrics: their best ever. They are very clever and catchy, with almost no swearing. Read em'. "Birth Defect" is the best. For a few people who listen to Helmet's old work and say "If you've heard one album by them, you've heard em' all," I beg of you to listen to this. It's pretty bad they broke up. They are so good. Too bad dude. That's enough. peace... Standouts: "Exactly What You Wanted" "Like I Care" "Driving Nowhere" "Birth Defect" "Broadcast Emotion" "It's Easy to Get Bored" "Diet Aftertaste" "Insatiable" and the explosive outro "Crisis King"
More Of The Same: Bonnet has... sorry... Helmet has done it again and I mean it. It's more of the washed-out guitars and incessant drum flogging I got acquainted with from 'Betty'. It isn't anything near the loudness and bullet-headedness of 'Meantime' that made them such a hit. I'm no longer sad to see them go, but rather I wish they would hurry up and leave.
It's pretty good.: Ok, left me start off by saying I really do like this album, BUT, when I first purchased it, I was HOPING for another "Meantime". It was kinda a let-down. See the thing is, technically, musically, this is a "better" album, but the thing I really LIKED about meantime was that kinda "warped at times" "quivering" sound, almost out of tune sounding at times. This album is all in tune and musically correct, and that's a left down for me, I liked the old sound before they had the money to do a good production at a nice studio. Don't get me wrong, I listen to this album periodically, and some of the lyrics are really good, but it just doesn't have the "sound" that meantime did. The best thing I like about this album.... I can sing it, and sound pretty close to how it's supposed to sound; and the honesty in the lyrics, he says it like it is.
