[.ca] Door to Door

door to door not so bad after all:
when I heard the lead single "You are the girl" when first released I thought the cars were becoming somewhat of a parody it sounded worn I still don't like the song but there are plenty of good songs despite the albums somewhat weak moments opening cut "Leave or stay" and "Tao Tao Wayo Wayo"actuall very old cars numbers brought up to date the Ocasek sung moody "Fine line" and the country tinged Ben sung "Everything you say" are particularlly good the poppy "Strap me in" as well the heaviest song the cars ever recorded the title track "Door To Door" (including some great double bass drumming by Dave Robinson) "Go away" is another infectious song "Double trouble" is very eighties rock that is cars metal The Cars may have started to chug slightly at this point Yet this album is alot better overall then the critics gave it credit for and it does rock alot more then "heartbeat city"

The rust is setting in:
Oh hell, what happened here. This would not be a bad addition to the collection for reved up cars fans, but lacks the sound we came to know the group for. Worth nothing more then a $1 bargain at the local record fair, the only song that brings the group to their trusted synth-rock style is "you are the girl". "Double trouble" seems to be a left over jamming session from "Heartbeat city", with some selling potential as a single, but sounds too raw. Would have been nice if they given it some more production work. "Fine line" was a shellow effort which somewhat reminded me of a Leonard Cohen song, but without the soulful texture. Most of the album sounds nothing more then some inferior noise, like the group no longer having that magical desire. Not worth the effort of re-buying on cd.

The Cars at their not very best:
This is the first and most recent studio album for the Cars since the release of THE CARS' GREATEST HITS in 1985. The songs are very good in this album. YOU ARE THE GIRL,STRAP ME IN and COMING UP YOU are wonderful. Since the release of GREATEST HITS,the late Ben Orr released a solo album and Ric Ocasek released THIS SIDE OF PARADISE. For their own reasons, the Cars decided to disband after recording DOOR TO DOOR.

"Door to Door Explained":
This review will explain each song in the cars album Door to Door 1.Leave or Stay- an excellent song, and the line "She changed into her silk, I stood there drinking milk." shows how much comic relief the 80's provide. 2.You are the Girl- a very light hearted song that helps contrast the album 3.Double Trouble- Great song and good use of split channel production 4.Fine Line- an awesome mellow song-wonderful 5.Everything you Say- a song thats not too heavy and not too poppy. 6.Ta Ta Wayo Wayo- a nice short song that seems like filler but is actually a good song. 7.Strap me in-The best song on the album. 8.Coming up you- a song that is light-hearted but still manages to keep it under control 9.Wound up on you-A good song if someone left you and you know thell be back and thats ok with you ("I'm Easy when you need me"),you also are "wound up" on the person.(Good song anyway) 10.Go Away-this song is'nt telling anyone to go away it's chorus line is "Why don't we go away" A song for a stalled relationship or a past one(Good song anyway) 11.Door to Door- The Fast paced almost punk song of the album, it proves that Ocasek likes the word "mouth" ex Gimme some slack from panorama-"Magic mouth in the sun" You wear those eyes from panorama- "you paint you mouth, you let me know" Door to Door- "Plastic mouth melts in the sun," Or Don't Cha Stop from The Cars- "Right here your mouth is wet and dreamy." So there it is a great album Explained by a devoted Cars fan. I would reccomend Panorama as well if you want somthing different.

"Door To Door", then no more.:
I don't know why this album often gets dismissed, I know it's one of their weaker ones, but it's still good. Any fan of 1980's pop-rock should like some of it, and any fan of "Heartbeat City" should like most of it. "You Are The Girl" is the only real hit here, and though the first half of the album is good, the second half (or side two) is better. "Strap Me In" is a strong "Cars" rocker, and both "Coming up You" and "Wound Up On You" are good and catchy soft-pop tracks. Then "Door To Door" slams the album shut with a bang. Overall, it might not be as classic as the debut, but at this point, these "Cars" had alot of mileage.
