--Jacques Denis

THE WOMAN HAS SOUL!!!!!:
THIS IS A VERY TALENTED AND A VERY UNDERRATED ARTIST I LIKE THIS ALBUM IT IS VERY NICE. I WOULD RECOMMEND ANY NEO-SOUL FAN TO PURCHASE THIS ALBUM BECAUSE YOU WOULD BE VERY HAPPY THAT YOU DID. SHE DID A MIXTURE OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC I ENJOY THIS CD A WHOLE LOT AND I AM GOING TO PURCHASE MORE OF HER CDS!!!!

Meshell funkified:
The freshman release has a sound that is not to be missed. Funky-... bass rythms mixed up with total attitude. Plantation Lullabyes shows the least laid-back side of this amazingly talented female artist. Raw and yet evolved to the point of total mind-melt. Hear, listen, become a fan. This girl will take you places you never thought you'd go. Luana GodboX ...

Me'Shell is awesome:
And this is another excellent soulful/modern powerful record by her.

Better late than never..:
I recently purchased this album (about a decade past its release, but I guess it's better late than never). I am not a fan of typical R & B music, but I consider this CD to be a gem. It has so much soul and depth, and makes most of the music on the radio today seem like braindead pop by comparison. Meshell's voice is rich and powerful, the guitar sounds great, and the hints of jazz give it a haunting sound. Great for driving around in the city late at night. I'm anxious to hear other works by this great musician.

A debut release like few you'll ever hear:
This 1993 debut surpasses all expectations that anyone could hope for in a debut or even a seasoned player. The CD opens up with a seductive spell-binding instrumental that begs you to hop on for the ride. The second song "I'm Diggin' You (Like an Old Soul Record)," has elements of R & B, pop, jazz, hip-hop, funk, and all in the same song. Guess what? It works beautifully. "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)" rocks and it did make some but most people did not know what to make of Meshell as she did not fit the R & B diva mold. Thank God, that 10 years later she has evolved but NEVER played the game of trying to be conventional. In this release Meshell has put together a series of songs that tackle racial, sexual identity, religion, love in a meanigful AND entertaining manner. She's not preaching, just saying it like she sees it. It's amazing how she manages to rock the house while describing how mainstream society has ignored and oppressed her race in "Shoot'n up and Gett'n High", while in the very next song, which kicks of with a great piano riff, she quite seductively talks about running her hands through her lover's "Dred Loc"(s). I could go on about every song, except selection 13, which is the only song that did not resonate with me. "Outside Your Door" is one sexy song that also got some airplay and it was quite deserved. Meshell manages to make the spoken word seem as essential as more conventional "singing". She can do that too, but I love how she seems to be letting you into her world and the more she lets you in, the more you want to know. I give this my highest recommendation. If you like this release, go ahead and buy every single CD that Meshell has released as in my opinion each release is better than the prior.
