[.ca] Bluegrass Reunion - Red Allen

My Grass is Blue:
This is an excellent collection of Bluegrass staples. These players are masters of the genre. And the guest appearance by Jerry Garcia on banjo is so fitting, that it makes you wonder what would have happened if Garcia had chosen the Bluegrass path instead of the Dead. Of course Dawg Grisman and Red Allen and Herb Pedersen give the proper respect to this timeless style of music. I've owned this for about ten years, and I have yet to get tired of it.

Great Traditional Album!:
This is a really lovely album wich features the great singing of Red Allen, accompained by master musicians David Grisman, Herb Pedersen, James Kerwen & Jim Buchanan. I personally think the best ones in this CD are "She's No Angel" wich reminds me of a live show I heard of Red Allen & The Kentuckians, and "Is It Too Late Now!", other than the red-hot "Back Up And Push". The only dark spot in this CD is (IMO) Jerry Garcia's voice, wich surely doesn't belong to bluegrass at all. Altought he does a great guitar solo on "Fields Have Turned Brown" etc.., I absolutely can't stand his singing on "Ashes Of Love", one of my favourite bluegrass tunes! Very nice overall, it's great to hear Red again!

A must-hear for fans of bluegrass by the '60s Bay area crew.:
Along with albums by such groups as Old and in the Way (Garcia, Grisman, and friends) this disc is a beautiful collection of classics by some vurtuoso musicians that know how to achieve that "high lonesome sound". It has the nice combination of upbeat, bouncy tunes along with the wailing ballads. As a general Deadhead, I especially like the few tracks where Jerry Garcia joins in, but the whole thing is excellent.
