[.ca] Not for Kids Only

From Amazon.co.uk:
An aptly named album if ever there was one, Not for Kids Only combines the talents of two legendary performers, the late Jerry Garcia, singer/guitarist of the Grateful Dead, and David Grisman, mandolinist and father of "dawg music", a melding of bluegrass, jazz, swing, Latin and Jewish klezmer sounds. On this 1993 recording, the two devoted friends make seemingly effortless music, adapting traditional and old-time folk into a personalised sound so "homemade" (with jew's-harp and tambourine) as to inspire any child, young or old, to pick up whatever's at hand to play along. From the jaunty rhythms of "Jenny Jenkins" to the cornball humour of "Arkansas Traveller" and the laugh-out-loud lyrics of "A Horse Named Bill" ("I had a girl and her name was Daisy / And when she sang the cat went crazy"), this album, with Garcia's delightful hand-drawn cover art, tickles from top to bottom. --Alanna Nash

for kids of all ages:
This is a great album. It's a whole lot of fun. It's really just Jerry and Dave doing a bunch of kids songs. I don't have any kids so I can't really tell you how well this goes over with little ones; but then that should also tell you how nice this album is for adults. This album features the bluegrass, twangy sound that Garcia and Grisman became known for. It's really no different there. But unlike just about all their other albums, this one you can sing along really loud and have a blast doing it. Good stuff.

One word out of a wonderful album will not harm your kids!:
I've been aware of this album for some time, and we finally purchased it as a gift. The previous reviews here had us concerned that we would offend the parents of the kids for whom the gift was intended, because of the language comments we read. I wondered how could "Papa" Jerry make a kids album with cursing? Well, it being traditional music, they stayed true to the traditional lyrics and there is ONE word ("how in the hell could the old folks tell....") which most younger kids will miss. If you are a parent who regularly talks with their kids, you can easily discuss it with the older kids who do catch on, and look to you with surprise. I hope to expose children to all of the wonderful things life has to offer ... I fear over-protection. The disc was a fantastic selection. I think it's a wonderful collection of music, performed by master musicians. Fortunately, the insert has the lyrics included, so parents can learn them, and help the kids catch on to some of the clever wording-especially in Jenny Jenkins. I will certainly continue to share this music with all of the children in my life, and I hope you will too.

My son loves this album:
I first heard about this album while watching a show on Jerry Garcia. My two week old son heard "Jenny Jenkins" and immediately calmed down. I bought the album and my son, now six weeks, still quiets right down when I put it on for him. My husband and I also very much enjoy the music as it truly does evoke that sitting on the front porch watching the fireflys feeling. It is nice to have music for our whole family and I am sure this will become a lifelong favorite.

How the h*ll?:
GREAT GREAT CD! Unfortunatly I don't like my 3 year old singing some of the lyrics, and saying some of the words they say, so I had to do some cutting, and it's in one of the cutest songs on the cd. My wife and I were VERY dissappointed.

CULTURE AND CLASS:
When I first heard even a part of a song on this cd I was completely overjoyed. I just bought this disk for my brother who had his first baby this month and I know for sure that he will love it as much as the baby will. This alblum is a fantastic way to introduce a baby into a world of happiness and music.I believe that whenever he hears these tunes in his later years He'll say "God, I remember listening to these songs with my dad when we were on our way to go hiking." Music makes memories so much easier to touch and makes life sweeter along the bumpy road. The earlier people learn this the better. if anything else, he may ask who the singers of this song are and be in for a great story.. it is truely not for kids only.
