This is one of Bobby's best bands ever.: This was Bobby's dream band: Bobby, Vic Dickenson, Dave McKenna, Jack Lesberg and Cliff Leeman. The gig didn't last long, but the seven lp's that resulted are a treasure trove. I hope that all five of the Chiaroscuro albums and the two Phontastics will appear on CD.
This is a must-have!: This recording has been my current favorite for over a year, and I have hundreds of classic jazz recordings colelcted over 37 years. I got it because of Vic Dickenson, and soon realized there were many stellar performances here. My dad with 30 years more jazz appreciation experience considered the keyboard work from Dave McKenna to be the stellar feature and I'd say it is deserving of equal billing with Hackett and Dickenson. Sugar (by Maceo Pinkard) and Struttin' (by Louis Armstrong) are unreplicatable masterpieces! This recording from 1970 is a must-have.
A real find-so atmospheric: This CD is a real find and the atmosphere from the Roosevelt Grill adds so much to the recording. The faint sound of knives and forks on dinner plates is not out of place as people are clearly having a good time and you can tell the music is working its magic. It's hard to describe, but this recording is just special. The trombone playing is superb and the recording is also an excellent supplement to Dickenson's "Breaks, Blues & Boogies." As a trombone enthusiast I added this CD to my jazz collection for Dickenson's playing, as there's a surprising dearth of Dickenson's recordings in the current CD catalog, but all the muscians are clearly in brilliant form. The vocals on "Sugar" I could do without but still I'd elevate this CD to my jazz top 10 out of 400 or so jazz recordings.
